i say 30%.

if you ask the peeps that do, they'll say a high number.

the peeps that don't would say a low number.

so I have to give a serious answer then?

Okay...looking around, looking at people smoking pot I never thought who would smoke...I think it's about 60%.

10-20%
Of the percentage, some hardly ever, some frequently, and some all the time.

I'd rather smoke grass. Pots are to damn hard to keep lit and they taste funny.

How about how many backpackers drink until they're drunk? I'll guess 65%. 30% of which get to the point where someone else needs to put them to bed or they're in danger of setting themselves on fire or they're obnoxious and won't shut up.
I'll take a pot smoker over a drunk anyday. They just sit around eatting alot and commenting on what a beautiful night it is.

"I'll take a pot smoker over a drunk anyday. They just sit around eatting alot and commenting on what a beautiful night it is."

In theory I agree with you sass. But on the other hand drinkers don’t generally roll out of the tent in the morning and slam a 6 pack. Most drinkers don’t drink 3 or 4 beers at every single rest stop. Drinkers don’t actually stop on the trail to drink. I’ve been on trips where people were smoking each and every rest stop, were smoking first thing in the morning, and smoked non stop in the evening. I have had people smoking just before we had to attempt a very dangerous scramble.
It was a smoking trip, not a hiking trip.

“Makes 'em braver, Nige.”

Well they better be brave because if they ruin MY hike through their impairment or get my hurt through their impairment I’m kickin’ their ass.

There are a very few choice people I trust to smoke responsibly. The rest I will never hike with again.
Nigal

I don't really care who smokes and how doesn't as long as they know when to do so. same with drinking. smoking or drinking right before a dangerous scramble is just plain unresponsible. Not only do they put themself in danger, but also the person who hikes with them.

I get pissed if you remove my option to not take part in something I am opposed to.

I get pissed if you make me unknowingly transport illegal substances.

I get pissed if I am made an accessory to crime.

I get pissed if I am made to babysit someone who is not in their right mind.

I know a few smokers and plenty of drinkers and I get along just fine with them but they have all been adult enough to respect my position and keep their decisions and consequences their own.

Five years ago, I had a guy die on me because of overdoing it, smoking, drinking, pills, whatever. He fell of a cliff in Linville Gorge in the middle of the night. He was a friend of a friend, I didn't know him, nor did I like what I did see of him.

Its not cool #&%!$, I almost quit the whole scene.

Be careful who you go with...

So far, on any of the TT hikes I have been on, I have not witnessed anything that even remotely comes close to the excesses described here. Are we rally looking at that sort of extremism as the status quo? I don't think so.

I choose my hiking companions very very carefully. I have very very good friends I would NEVER be out on a hike to the backcountry with. I may be mistaken but it seems most of the people on this forum mainly hike well established trails with a few varyations like scrambles and such to summit. I look at a summit and a map and try to go up the side without the trail. I prefer trailless hiking and when you go out to places where it is rare to see another human for days and in the event of an emergency you may have to get yourself out or rely on your companions to do so. I would NEVER hike with someone using alcohol or drugs in the backcountry. Save those things for the night or two of carousing after the hike is done and you are back in civilization. If it is just camping with a walk involved, like in a campground or something it would be no big deal to either smoke or drink. Just my opinion.

Treebeard, I have witnessed such drunks, numerous times, that's why I said what I did. Have never witnessed people stoned out of their gourd enough to endanger themselves or others.

I’ve seen excesses on both the smoking and the drinking fronts. No one got out of control or was offensive or obnoxious. I did have one trip where someone had to say, “Hey guys…could someone help me get to my tent?”. But the guy was a great guy, was nice and quiet most of the night and we had no problem helping him. I myself accidentally over indulged in the vodka one trip but I knew when it was time to go to bed and I was kind of embarrassed. I just like some alcohol to help me sleep. I have a hard enough time controlling my mouth when sober. I can say some really stupid shlt when I have too many drinks.
