No more Wal-Mart DVD rentals, sold to Ne tflix

“Wal-Mart has apparently sold their DVD rental biz to Netflix. Just got an email from them to that effect, and you get the same message when you go to the DVD rental site from Wal-Mart's main web site.

Netflix and Blockbuster both say they have 40,000+ titles, but Blockbuster is cheaper ($14.99 vs. $17.99). Who do I go with?”

You also get 2 free in store rentals each month in addition to the mail sent ones. Counts for new releases and games too.

It's very convenient. (I've tried both)

If you watch a lot of movies though, you might want to test each one first and watch turn-around times in your area. Your mileage may vary.

“I use the Netflix and have been real happy with it. The place that sends them is one day away by mail. I chose Netflix because I have heard they have a bigger selection of foreign films, smaller indi films and tv series on dvd. I have yet to come across and odd title they haven’t had. But having never done the Blockbuster thing I can’t say what they’re like.”

“I've been leaning towards Netflix - because of their catalogue, selection and service. You do have to weigh that against Blockbuster's 2 in store rentals and the price, but I think Netflix is worth it to ne.

Tech - I'd suggest you browse through the catalogue and see if Netflix has things you want that Blockbuster doesn't. If it doesn't - give the cheaper deal and the retail pick-up option the first shot.

“If you get Netflix Ped you have to rent the movie The Hebrew Hammer. You'll laugh your ass off. NetFlix is the only place I've found it.

I was thinking of doing the GameFly thing too for video games but it's like $12.99 and you only get 2 games at a time.”

“It did take a bit of learning how to set up the que and when to send back the dvds so I’d get the new releases the day after they come out. Sometimes there is a wait for the hottest releases if ya don’t do it right.”

You set up a list of the movies you want and they ship them 3 at a time to you, don't they?

“Right. The trick is to put the newer movies at the top of your list. For me they get mailed like only 30 miles away so turn around is quick. After I watch the movies I hold them for Monday's mail. They get there Tuesday and the new releases are released. If ya send them back too early they send ya the movies next in line behind the new releases because they aren't released until the next day. The trick is to get the returns to them on Tuesday.”

“Yes, there is sales tax added Stovie.
I didn't know that about new releases. But then I don't usually worry about new releases in general and only once over the several years I've used Net Flix have I had trouble getting a newer movie. It was Old School for some reason. It was no tragedy, believe me. ; )

If unusual films are not your cup of tea, go with Blockbuster and save the extra dough.”
