Staying connected

“It would seem quite a few of you are 'staying connected' on the trail, you post while you're hiking.

I was hoping some of you would share what you use.

Do you use your cell phone? Do you find it hard to get a signal? Do you use satellite internet? Palm pilots? Laptops? Blackberry's?

I'm trying to get a feel for how much electronic gear people are willing to take out on the trail and their positive/negative experience with it.

“the only electronic gear i took while i was on the AT last year was a 10 dollar digital watch. however, i would have taken a cell phone had i had one. when i went to hot springs earlier this year, i couldnt get any service, but in damascus i had anywhere from 3 to 5 bars. go figure. you can get online from just about any trail-town library, and i often did. some ppl used palm pilots to send emails to friends to cut and paste onto trailjournals.com. i dont know what the hell a raspberry is, but if i ever go hiking in alaska i plan to get a gps.”
