Florida girl found buried alive in landfill
CNN) -- Police found an 8-year-old Florida girl buried alive with minor injuries in an abandoned landfill Sunday morning, hours after she was reported abducted, according to officials in Lake Worth.

Authorities have detained a suspect, identified as 17-year-old Milagro Cunningham, whom they said the girl identified as her attacker.

"There was a yellow recycling bin, and the lid was flipped open," said Lake Worth Police Sgt. Mike Hall. "And inside the dumpster was a pile of rocks, boulders. And you could see a hand in there."

pretty much defines the word -depraved.

Also an interesting discussion point for the death penalty.

Can anyone see how and when this person should be released back into society ??

Which is kinder and safer for society, keep him locked up for life, a form of torture and I am against torture, and a permanent risk to those who have to feed and guard him, or to put him down as we would a sick animal ??

Realize that when someone is locked up for life with no chance of parole, nothing they do can make things worse so there is no inhibition to killing guards when they attempt to escape. Much more dangerous for the staff at the prisons.

Well, it is Florida, manuka. If he kills another inmate or a guard after he turns 18, then he could (and probably would) be put to death. So, unlike states without the death penalty, he can make things worse for himself. But someone else would have to die.

I don't think you can fry anybody, child or adult, for a crime where the victim survived.

True, it was not due to anything on his part, but you still need to habeus a corpus.

They are trying him as an A dult. Still won't get the death penalty, she didn't actually die.

Life behind bars. Mayber another inmate will get some alone time with him.

Sometimes I think people who commit sex crimes should be fixed. Call me mean if you want, I just don't have any patience for people who think it's okay to molest children and rape. It seems like a very fitting punishment. I imagine the ACLU would have something to say about it though.

It is not just the rape Sass, it is the mental state where he thinks it is ok to just kill a child afterward, that a childs life is of so little value that he can just dump her in the trash afterward.

Unfortunately, it's not their genitals that are broken, it's their brains. They've tried castration in other countries. It doesn't work. Sure, they may not be able to rape anymore, but they can still molest.

I doubt this guy will live to a ripe old age. Ironically, he will get death, but not from the courts. He will undoubtedly be tried by a jury of his prison peers and executed according to prison code.

So, nothing here. Let's move on.

This is where I disagree with you Geobeet.

I am against torture, and putting him in a prison with the tacit understanding that the other prisoners will kill him by bludgeoning or a home made knife, is a disgusting society cop-out.
At least have the decency to carry out your own (not you Geo, Society) executions in the most humane manner possible.

How about this (nothing to do with FL)
NEW YORK (CNN) -- New York's comptroller urged the nation's top health official Sunday to ban high-risk sex offenders and convicted rapists from receiving Viagra paid for by Medicaid.

snip

Hevesi said his office found that from January 1, 2000, through March 31, 2005, 198 Level 3 sex offenders received Medicaid-reimbursed Viagra after being convicted of a sex offense. Sex offenders are those convicted of crimes such as rape, sexual abuse, and sexual conduct against a child.

Level 3 offenders are those considered by the courts most likely to commit crimes again.

"Boland the charges will be attempted murder, sexual battery on a child under 12 and false imprisonment of a victim under 13. He could face life in prison if convicted on all counts.

Boland said Cunningham confessed to all three charges."

-------------------------

I was suggesting that if someone is sentenced to life in prison under these circumstances where other prisoners would subject the prisoner to ongoing attacks and a probable death at the hands of the other convicts, that a more humane treatment would be a lethal injection.

He has not been convicted yet, so this does not apply to the Florida case. He still has the right to a jury of his peers finding him guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

Execute him for what ?? for the crime that we are sentencing him to be locked up for the rest of his life for Geo.

Manuka, you can't execute somebody for a crime that does not carry the death penalty. We have this silly little document called the U.S. Constitution. And we have this group of folks wearing robes who decide what is humane under the Constitution. Their idea of humane treatment is not in accord with your idea of humane treatment. So it's a moot point.

However, assuming he is convicted and sentenced, he may be in total agreement with you in his last moments on this green Earth.

i have to agree with what manuka's been saying here.

slightly off topic, but my friend and i were having a discussion about prison in general a couple days ago.

i think it's really sad that we as a society do allow the things that go on inside a prison. we are fully capable of preventing the prisoner-prisoner crimes that go on, yet we just look the other way. it's like a big joke.

punishment for crimes should involve incarceration, fines, work, whatever. but not daily rape and torture from other inmates. WTF kind of society are we?

We are not as civilized as some.

Thank you Sacco, that is exactly what I am saying.

By ignoring prison conditions society IS responsible for what happens.
Sort of like if you are told that your sidewalk is icy, and do nothing, you are held responsible when someone falls, after you were made aware of the risk and chose to ignore it.

Regardless of the constitution and Geos group of folks wearing robes, we are condemning these people to torture and death under the current system, and we are aware of it. I think perpetuation of this is barbaric, and the pretence that we are not executing them in a cruel and inhumane way is depraved indifference.

Not quite as depraved as the person who preys on the innocent, but pretty horrific and close to the ultimate in hypocrisy.

Personally I think Lifers should instead be turned into slaves and sold at auction to the highest bidder as property. the new owner would be then held responsible for any misconduct on the offenders part....

its either that or a nice cablecasted death match for 20 convicts with a pardon as a prize.... much more effective then the current parole system

i agree with everything sacco said! that's interesting there are groups working to end that, bitpusher. i wonder, why the heck wouldn't they get very far?? i don't understand. this isn't some 3rd-world country, i would think everyone would be in agreement that rape shouldn't happen in prison, no matter what the inmates are there for. what kind of a barbarian would think rape is an appropriate punishment for a crime? i mean i can see why people might be angry about a crime someone committed, such as molesting a child, but what if that inmate were to get out of jail after being tortured in prison? i would think that would do wonders for their anger problem. and people do get imprisoned for crimes they didn't commit, upon occasion. a person's punishment for a crime is their jail sentence, period; the fact that the people entrusted with doling out the punishment can't be trusted to make sure no further "punishment" takes place is abhorrent, if you ask me.

You can't execute a person for those type of crimes, but how about putting them in the general population? I can't recall the show I saw it on but if a prisoner who had done heinous crimes, mainly against children, ever pissed off the guards they just made public what the person was in prison for and cleaned up the body a few hours later. I hate hearing when a prisoner is held in solitary for their own protection. Put them all in one big open prison yard with a color code for their crimes, let the criminals police themselves.

It is a cop-out, sacco.

The very idea of public cruelty is medieval.

If one of the people I cared about were imprisoned for something minor and was subject to abuse, I would not say they deserved it.

The same goes for any other human being.

I believe in treating others as I should be treated by others.

Manuka, I didn't even read the article. I agree it's not just a sexual crime but a lack of regard for life also.

Sacco, there are not cameras everywhere in prison. The prisoners have "privacy" in certain areas, bathrooms and cells.

maybe sass, but something tells me that if it meant not being tortured and raped on a daily basis, most prisoners would opt for loss of privacy.

There are ways to protect the inmates.

Some systems choose to ignore inmate safety.

That sort of thing plays into the nature of some humans to be cruel.

In any population there are those who are willing to commit acts of cruelty.

The Nazi Party and Soviets had no problem finding them.........just to name two.
