Nordhouse Dunes-Manistee National Forest

“I've never been to Nordhouse Dunes before. How long will we be hiking each day? What time will we be done on Sunday? I'm just trying to plan out meals...”

Never been there myself, but I believe there is only so much hiking that can be done at the Dunes. This should be more of a laid back, hangout kind of trip. I would think that you could leave anytime you want on Sunday.”

“I'm signed up as a maybe. I'll be nearby w/ a couple friends for the weekend and may be able to meet up w/ y'all at the trailhead for a bit of hiking. Wouldn't be staying the night or anything but would love the chance to meet some new people and get some hiking in.

“Mugsy and I have made it home in one piece. Poor Mugs is still hobbling.”

Mugsy got bit by a dog in the PARKING LOT just as we got there Friday. Some big mutt tried to kill him, it was nasty. Mugsy was at my feet, not 1 foot away from me, when the dog attacked without warning. The owner tried to pull his animal off but was taking too damn long. I jumped in and the dog let go of Mugsy and turned on me. I actually got the worse bite (right hand) but seem to be healing well. Mugsy was doing well the rest of Friday and until late in the afternoon on Saturday. He started with a small limp and quickly went to putting no weight on it at all. Mugsy's right leg is swollen and very tender to the touch now. I already have him on antibiotics.

And yes, I will be reporting the bite to authorities.

re FLYS: Friday - almost none. Saturday - HORRIBLE (Mugs might have had 100 on him at one time). Sunday - didn't wait around for those bastards to wake up but was told by a local that Sunday was to be the peak.”

They say that is the best way for people to get bit is by trying and break up a dog fight-i'm glad you didnt get it too bad but keep an eye on your hand, a dog bite is known to get infected very easily and its no joke when it does.”

“Re hand: I was a bit concerned on Saturday as it was tender to grasp, but it wasn't any more tender then you'd expect for that kind of puncture wound. Today I have zero tenderness in making a fist so I think I dodged the bullet.

BTW, I made it to the Lighthouse on Saturday. That was quite a haul.”

“yeah I am thinking of trying it next weekend. How long did it take you?”

“The Lighthouse is a bit over 6 miles from the Rec Parking area. You can see the top of the Lighthouse once you are a mile or so away.”

“A bunch of peeps met at the beach. They hiked for awhile, they stopped and set up tents, then they ate dinner, then they talked, Mugsy barked and they went to sleep. They woke up, ate breakfast and Mugsy got bit by Crash Bang (sorry Mugsy :()”

“I arrived at Nordhouse at 9am on Saturday morning and began walking the beach in search of some TTers camped somewhere. I found a camp around 9:30 and assumed it was who I was looking for but no one in camp was stirring. I chatted w/ a couple and a dog who were camped nearby then walked around some more. Finally, when I went back, they were up and taking down camp. Crash!Bang! was there and I met BFB and his dog, Marshall. While packing, ChinMusic and his dog, Musgy, came along the beach. After they were packed up, we headed back to the trailhead to meet up the others. Found NW IN Ben and hubcap at the parking area. Hung out there for a spell then got back to the beach and headed north a short distance. Found a nice place to relax and did just that. I stayed til about 1pm then had to head back to Ludington to join my friends.

Great to see you again, Crash! And, it was great to meet new TTers. Thanks for letting me join in on your trip for a few hours. I needed that.

“Had a lot of fun. Back got toasted (along with most of the tt'ers). Lily was dead tired all day Sunday and Monday. Look forward to hiking with all you again...without the flies!

“Mugsy is 100% now, it seems. I took him out for a walk on our bike trail, let him swim a bit at the lake, stopped to watch a baseball game at the park, and things looked back to normal.”
