Little baby FAWN PHOTOView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 15 of 15 messages posted.
OH DEER!!! “I was on what I figure is the FINAL scouting trip for a primitive campsite on the river for the Upper Iowa canoe trip in two weeks. Walked back to the river bottomland, probably a mile through DNR hunting land -- leased out for crops -- and reached tall grasses, nettles(!) and trees by the river. As I headed into the trees, trying to avoid nettles, I heard a horrendous bleat, BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I thought, "WTF, did I step on a rabbit or kill a frog??!?!" I looked back and THERE WAS A TINY FAWN, laying on the ground, all tight together, legs pulled in and all. Geez, did I step on it???!? Hope not!! I was cursing cuz I didn't have my camera... I mean, the one time I don't bring it with me. AAAARGH!! I checked out the river, then came back to find the fawn again. It had gotten up on very wobbly legs and moved out beyond the trees into the grass. Amidst more cursing, I had a lightbulb moment. "Say, didn't I take photos at the parade yesterday and do absolutely *nothing* with them yet?? And didn't I have my camera in this day pack????" YES!!! So then I pestered the poor baby, almost right in its face. It got up, bleated and moved again, and the settled down. I'd seen a lone deer running up a hillside when I arrived. Wonder if that was mom? I've always heard you just leave little, baby fawns alone. (And then I figured, sheeyat, if mommy doesn't come back, it'll be one less deer to slam into a car in the future. hahahahaha... REALLY! I thought that!) So... here is the baby, up close and personal: http://community.webshots.com/photo/338291403/351278700XRkYPK” 11:11:33 PM 5/22/05 “Cool photo Lizs...very cute.” 11:34:24 PM 5/22/05 “shame on you lizs! you Bambi terrorist!” 11:59:38 PM 5/22/05 “How ironic liz, My mom was having her field bushhogged this afternoon and they found a fawn bedded down in the grass. They moved it to finish then put it back somewhere safe in hopes that the mother will come back for it.” 12:01:13 AM 5/23/05 “once i found a baby fawn in a farmers fieldthe best thing to do is not touch it -the mother is usually not far away--” 4:43:01 AM 5/23/05 “Adorable!” 8:05:49 AM 5/23/05 “Very cute.” 8:13:53 AM 5/23/05 “Nice shot, Lizs” 8:16:34 AM 5/23/05 “Nice pic.” 8:19:05 AM 5/23/05 “Did ya have to kill it?” 8:20:34 AM 5/23/05 “That is some good eatin!” 9:11:38 AM 5/23/05 “Cow Patty had a very similar photo as her Christmas card last Xmas. It's still up on my fridge. =) Very cool you got so close Lizs.” 9:15:24 AM 5/23/05 “Couple of fawn notes.... Unless I'm mistaken, newborn fawns have no scent. I have seen fawns and rabbits play leapfrog together. Taking turns jumping over each other. I talked to a hunter who said he had seen the same thing....I wonder if there is a symbiotic relationship between the rabbits and deer? Or perhaps, they just like to play.” 9:25:35 AM 5/23/05 “Lovely...” 9:26:44 AM 5/23/05 “1. Are beef steer to veal as a deer is to a fawn???? 2. At the lake last spring my father-in-law and I worked all morning carrying docks and over the heads of two little fawns. They were curled up right near our work area and didn't move. My understanidn is that they instinctively freeze and don't move . . ..figuring the best means of prevent slaughter is simply not being seen.” 9:43:07 AM 5/23/05
