Honeymoon trip
Hey, all. I just got married a couple of months ago and thanks to school, we have delayed the honeymoon until this summer. We were originally going to go on a roadtrip from the Midwest to the West Coast and visit people and go hiking along the way.

My husband, who is a very recent convert to backpacking, mentioned that he would rather backpack than drive around and go backpacking a little on the side (this is proof that he is an excellent spouse). So now we're looking at spending our three weeks doing a couple of shorter (3-4 day) trips to get back into shape and then doing a longer trip, maybe a hundred miles over ten days or so. We want to pick a place that is in the mountains with gorgeous views and plenty of water. We've both seen pictures of such places and now we want to be the people who actually go there. We're willing to drive to most places in the US or possibly Canada. The trip will be in June/July. I am in love with the Rockies and thus am leaning that way. Any or all suggestions are welcome.

Also, we're probably going to try to recover from the longer trip by lazing around a cabin or bed and breakfast nearby for several days afterwards, so if anyone has recommendations on that, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks,
Sarah

We did a backpacking trip in the Canadian Rockies for our honeymoon. It was absolutely beautiful. We had 3 weeks and one whole week was spent in Mt Robson Provinvial Park.

What was great about the Canadian Rockies is that you can go backpacking and then when you are done go and stay at a B&B for a night or two to relax.

That's what my wife and I did for our honeymoon in the NC mountains around the Blue Ridge Parkway, and we stayed in a log cabin.

Very nice!

OK, this is a lot further out of the way, but my hubby (Thinkbubelz) and I loved Denali National Park in Alaska...

Very remote, but one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited in my life. :-)

the only thing is that I understand Mosquitos can be bad when the weather warms up, but it really depends upon when you go... Also, the availability of water is dependent upon which area of the park you visit as well...

Alaska in General is a place I'd go to again in a heartbeat. Lots of National parks and National Forests (free camping). Interesting terrain, and very friendly people.

This past months National Geographic had an article on 10 classic hikes. Some were international, but the portion of the Continental Divide Trail was fabulous. That articule may help.

You could also hike 10 days in the far reaches of Yellowstone or the Tetons.

If it was me, I'd consider the CDT thing I mentioned, Glacier, or Yellowstone.

Yellowstone is also a great place to hike! :-) I've only day hiked there, but if you want to see wildlife, you should go there--you will be amazed at the things you see (bear, buffalo, elk, otters, pelicans, coyotes, etc.) and you'll also witness and incredible number of large, 30 lb camera lenses whereever there are animals near the road... LOL

Tetons are beautiful. We didn't get a chance to backpack either-- mostly just day hikes, but we'd definitely go back there, too!

Of course, the Grand Canyon is interesting... Some people do the rim to rim hike, and stay a few days in the bottom of the canyon before coming back out. Be prepared, though, the water supply can be iffy on the way down, from what I understand. (We've only day hiked on the South Rim areas....)

I was think about doing Mount Assiniboine for one of our upcoming anniversaries.

There's a lodge that you can stay at right in the park.

A friend of mine is taking a float plane to a remote cabin in the Cascades for his honeymoon. It sounds like a really good trip.

Backpacking honeymoon. Sounds like great fun. If I were planning this for my hubby and I it would be in Idaho. Either a fly in to the Frank or a loop in the southern Sawtooth.

The Frank Church River of no Return Wilderness is big. There are also airstrips in it. I would have a charter drop us off at Chamberlain Basin and pick us up 5 or 6 days latter.

The only hot springs in Idaho that is inside protected wilderness is in the southern part of the Sawtooth Wilderness, Lynx Creek. A loop out of the Atlanta area could include a stop at the spring for naked wilderness soaking and play.

Advice, plan on camping a mile or so off the trail. In Idaho anyway, that will usually mean you will have the privacy for the more typical honeymoon activities. Not much better that hanging around camp naked as a jay bird, skinny dipping, having sex outdoors without worrying about visitors. Mid August is best in Idaho for outdoor nakedness without mosquito bites.

Picked a copy of Lonely Planet's "top hiking places in the US". Was a nice read. you might slide into a Border bookstore (or similar) and sit down and read it over a cup of coffee.

Sounds fun, Sass and I did the same nearly 9 years ago. We went to a place called gibson lake in pike national forest in colorado. We camped at 12,000 plus feet foe 3 days had a beautifl lake and view all to ourselves, If you want the info email me, it in my profile.
