allegheny, adirondack, & algonqiun
My boyfriend and I are interested in backapacking in the Allegheny's, Adirondack's or Algonquin this July, but we have never been. We're interested to know what they are like. We live in AZ, so we imagine the terrain and climate to be very different ;) We will be in Rochester, NY for a wedding which seems within easy access. Any info on accessibility, difficulty, highlights and lowlights of any of these areas would be helpful. We are in pretty good shape, we just hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim (S to N to S) over a couple of days this past weekend and have backpacked in variety of places in the west. Thanks!

Rim to rim to rim??

How far is it from Phantom Ranch to the North Rim?

about 14 grueling, beautiful miles with a gain of about 6000'.

What type of hiking are you looking for? Mountains? Seclusion? Valleys?

I can’t speak for Allegheny or Algonquin Parks, but be ready for bugs in the Adirondacks.

Xmas day '02 my family and I stepped off the South Rim for a six-nighter.

First night was at Phantom Ranch.

Two of the boys and I hiked to Clear Creek and spent three nights there.

My wife and youngest weren't up for the ten-mile death march and spent those nights at Phantom Ranch.

We all had one more night at PR and hiked out the Bright Angel Trail with our final night at Indian Garden Campground.

Winter is a great time to hike there, but the days are too short.......especially at the bottom of that hole.

algonquin is great for canoe trips, moose, and wolves.

ADKS are better for backpacking trips.

bugs galore at both in july
