This past weekend
Last Friday I went for a hike in Onion Valley, west of Independence in the Eastern Sierra. Here are pictures I took:

On Saturday I took a snow travel skills class up at Virginia Lakes just north of Lee Vining.

Then on Sunday I climbed Waucoba Mountain in the Inyo Range - Here are pictures of that hike:

After coming down from Waucoba, I drove out to 190 near Lone Pine via the Saline Valley Road. Here are pictures from along the Saline Valley Road:

It was a nice weekend.

Beautiful pictures as always Wingding!
I love the pictures of the Saline Valley...have always wanted to go there, that little creek and waterfall are pretty neat. What was the temperature in there? Did you go to the warm springs? I have read about those warm springs & that they have really have been built up by the visitors.

That snow skills class sounds great, especially for this year with the heavy snowpack we got... something I should take one day..do they just teach you self arrest & hiking with crampons
Onion Valley is beautiful, looks like quite a bit of snow up in there...but im sure with the warm days we have been having a lot of it is melting

Thanks for sharing!

Kathy, great pictures, looks like you did a lot in one weekend. Sorry I missed you at Onion Valley, you must have come off the mountain pretty late, was it windy enough. I went from sea level to posthole level so went down to the campground to get some real sleep.

madeintahoe - I took the Snow Travel Skills class through Sierra Mountain Center in Bishop. It was a really good class. We met at 7 am and didn't get done until 7 pm.

They only allow 7 students per instructor, so it was a small class. We started with crampon skills, then went on to the use of the ice axe. After that it was on to practicing self arrest - with and without an ice axe, and then we practiced snow anchors and belays.

Doug - On Friday in Onion Valley I started hiking around 8 am and was postholing before long. I was thinking about doing Kearsarge Peak again, so I headed up toward Golden Trout Lakes. I was at 10,900 feet when I got tired of post-holing and dealing with that wind. Yes, it was windy. I got back down to the trailhead by noon, so I was gone by the time you got there. I looked for your truck, but didn't see it. Hopefully, I'll get to meet you another time.

Mike - it was a pretty busy weekend. I came home tired and I've decided to stay close to home this weekend instead of fighting the holiday traffic.
