Check out this damage to the Beartooth Highway. For those who were part of Montanapalooza, this was the route we took from Billings to Aero's cabin

Keep Your Fingers Crossed
Bison, I wish I could do ya some good, but we've moved to North Carolina's Outer Banks. So, the only shovel work I do now is to get my Ram unstuck an off the beach before high tide rolls in. ;-)

Its closure is a major economic nightmare for the locals and the powers-to-be promise to get it opened quickly, but it looks like it could take awhile to me - too many agencies involved.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is still closed north of Mount Mitchell. MM 355 to 344 I believe. I saw a few places over the weekend where the road appered to have stress cracks starting south of there. The sweat and toil of man only last for a little while, then nature reclaims it.

PARK WATCH
The Blue Ridge parkway has implemented a program called Park Watch. The objective is to encourage park visitors and neighbors to take a more active role in protecting and preserving their park. You are asked to be alert and to report any uncontrolled fires, emergencies, accidents, safety hazards, vandalism, and crime to a park employee or call toll-free 1-800-PARKWATCH (1-800-727-5928). For general Parkway information, call: (828) 259-0398.

More than likely won't be fixed by August, sorry.

Any shuttles will just take longer, but will still be worth it. You'll just have to come through, or close to Cody.

While in Cody swing into the Proud Cut and sample their Rocky Mountain Oysters.

Wish they had a map of where the damage was, I assume most of it is up high, We just need to be able to get from Cooke City to Beartooth Lake

Dang, we didn't have time to drive that road last summer. I hope it's fixed soon. I really feel for the people whoses livlihood depends on that road.

Bison, getting from Cooke City to Beartooth Lake won't be a problem. That area isn't in the slide area.

Bison, if you don't have maps of the area you can go to topozone.com and type in Beartooth Lake, WY. The highway runs right my the lake. From there just trace the highway up to Beartooth Pass and then into Montana. Looking at the photos in the Gazette, I believe all of the slides are on the Montana side as you climb up from Parkside Campground (the Red Lodge side of the Beartooth Hwy).

Aero will have more info I'm sure.

That's what I figured from looking at the photo's, I've driven the highway before and it looked liked the damage was higher up.

The slide went right down the Quad Creek drainage across all 4 legs of the switchbacks. But it's all on the Montana side of the pass, so anything on the Wyoming side should be accessible from the Chief Joseph Highway. I think it's only about a 1/2 hr. to 45 min. longer to go around that way from Red Lodge to Cooke City. We've had to do that before at times when the pass got snowed in during June.
