Just a thought for a full moon campout
I checked the full moon schedule for ths summer. In August there is a full moon on Friday, August 19. I'm thinking about hiking in Cades Cove (GSMNP) under the full moon. Hike could be either Friday or Saturday nights, or both.

If there is enough interest, I could check and see if the Cades Cove Campground Group Site is available that weekend. The group camp is tents only. If the group camp isn't available, then whoever wants to go could camp in Cades Cove or Elkmont.

By the way, I checked with a ranger at Cades Cove. Hiking is allowed in the cove after dark. All they ask is that everyone have adequate lights and don't hike alone because there are a lot of bears out at night in the cove.

Woodzie, I may be interested. Why don't you post a trip. A group of us from Indiana have been looking for a good date to do some fastpacking. How long is this trail? We'd like to do about 30 miles or so. I'm sure some people would want to camp, but we could hike with you for a while and then keep moving on. GSMNP is only about 5-6 hours from here. We were looking for a date with a full moon, so weather cooperating that could be the weekend.

The Cades Cove Loop is along a road and is 11 miles. All or part of it can be hiked. There are options:
1) Cut across one of the gravel roads to the other side; or
2)Turn back whenever.

This trip would be a car-campout with night hike(s). Saturday folks can day hike if they want. Most trails into the mountains from Cades Cove start at the picnic area which is near the campground.

I can't figure out how to do it. It wants me to start a new thread. How to I get the already-in-progress thread to show up? If you know how to do it, please feel free to fix it for me :-)

And yes, I posted this on the other side as well. Might be intersting to get the two groups together.

I can see it now - a squirt gun fight at night in Cades Cove between TTers and the forces of the dark side (light sabers optional)

You can see most of the animals during the day so no telling what you might see or hear walking that road at night.

hey woodzie, why don't you go ahead and see about reserving a group site at Cades Cove (do they have one?). Even if we don't have a large group we will at least have it for those who do show.

woozie - email matt and he'll connect this thread to your trip. I've done this before when I started a "what-if" thread and it turned into a trip.

lol, leave it to woodzie to plan the full moon trip. Hasn't been a full moon hike mentioned since she left the Front Range.

I love hiking under a full moon. The world is so different that way.

You better round up some of those Colorado folks for a full moon hike. Admit it, it was fun when we snowshoed under a full moon, wasn't it?
