“Im wondering if any of you have ever taken cream cheese backpacking? I have heard from a few that I should not take it with me..But I have in the past and have never had a problem with it..And the times I took it, was on a long BP trip & it was perfectly fine the whole trip. Just wanted to get some opinions on this Thanks everyone!” 10:31:31 PM 5/25/05 “I don't know abouit cream cheese but I took a can of EASYCHEESE to the SE-Backpacking with kids hike and the kids literally chewed the top off.” 10:40:02 PM 5/25/05 “I have taken eggs. Crack them ,scramble, and put them in little nalgenes. They last for about 3 days uncooked. Yumm.... although I like the freeze dried ones too real eggs make that weekend hike so nice. Eggs, baconbits, firetoasted bagels....mmmm” 10:44:16 PM 5/25/05 “my 9 yo old is nearly a wild animal. sorry about that batauex :)” 10:49:38 PM 5/25/05 “They make a "bakeless" mix. You can fix it easily on the trail. You do need to bring a little powered milk though. We use to take it on the 10 day trips with the kids and had it during the last nights meal. Its great...comes with Cherry topping. We got it at WinCo Back to Lost............. last edited: 5/25/05 10:51:41 PM” 10:50:27 PM 5/25/05 “I haven't taken cream cheese but have taken baby bell semi-soft cheeses for nine days out. They held up fine and I didn't have any stomach problems or anything. I say keep doing it if it's worked thus far. If you ever get a case of the cha-chas stop taking it.” 10:54:52 PM 5/25/05 “My bad...thought this was about cheese cake. Never mind. I have taken cream cheese though. I use one of those lunch/six pack coolers to carry cheese, eggs, sausage, etc. It keeps stuff cool for a day or two at least, more if snow is available.” 11:02:00 PM 5/25/05 “Me and others take cream cheese all the time..all you need is a creek or river to stash it in ;-) Get the stuff in tubs, you can always freeze it up a bit so it can handle the hike in. http://community.webshots.com/photo/352186870/352194262JZhxEl Now there is some major love for cream cheese...lmao!! I swear Wrongbridge had like a POUND of it on that bagel!!” 11:37:54 PM 5/25/05 “That looks yucky. Silly WB. Gotta love him tho. : )” 12:26:42 AM 5/26/05 “You know those little single serving jelly packages that they put on the tables at restaurants? They make the same thing with cream cheese in them. They can be stored at room temperature, and will keep a long time if not opened. Bagels keep longer than any other type of bread, and I like cream cheese on my bagels. That's how I do it. Find a restaurant that uses them, and patronize the place often enough to stash up in advance.” 6:59:57 AM 5/26/05 “Cream cheese holds up just fine. Keep it in a small plastic container with a secrue lid.” 8:36:36 AM 5/26/05 “Now that you all have solved the cream cheese What about the Lox ??” 8:43:01 AM 5/26/05 “All of the time. They sell those single serve packets ( like hobbit says) at most deli's. Some stores here carry boxes of single serve pkts in the dairy section.” 10:45:43 AM 5/26/05 “I never have a problem with the cream cheese... even for a week. Now if I could just find a bagle that would last more than a day or two” 10:54:31 AM 5/26/05 “Hodge, when are you going to come visit us in WA? We have a favorite bagel place in Port Angeles that rocks! dicentra turned us all onto it. Oh is it good.” 11:30:02 AM 5/26/05 “Well, it looks like people do it and it works out, but to me, it seems like a bad idea. Just thought I'd throw out some opposition and see if I spark a fuego. JKing.” 12:32:04 PM 5/26/05 “TNP - Eggs will last longer uncracked - esp. if you dip them quickly in boiling water.” 2:17:01 PM 5/26/05 “You rebel wannabp! : )” 2:18:53 PM 5/26/05 “Wannabp: You and JKing should keep yer darned anti-cream cheese sentiments off this board. Any decent backpacker would have have a bagle with a shmeer! You should change your name to wannabebackpacker. (j/k, too.... hmmm if I was a halfway decent troll, I'd troll as JKing and see if anyone got it.) I never thought to take the stuff actually. I wonder what the calories/ounce is.” 3:33:56 PM 5/26/05 “Hey Pixie - Seems I rool through PA at least a couple of times a year. I guess I'll have to check the place out :-) In the mean time I guess I have to go to California to meet you.... hehehe” 7:38:54 PM 5/26/05 “Thanks so much everyone on your cream cheese thoughts! Since I have never had a problem with it going bad, I will continue to take it. Yes..I get the kind in the tub & then freeze it & I think keeping it in my bear canister helps a lot too Sarbar..what else is on that bagel? Something very good is cream cheese spread on those little cocktail size breads..they are about 2' x 2" square...in dark rye & then a few raisins on top, it's very good...some of you may have already had this combination. Wannabp, do you need any help with your resupply food for your JMT hike? I had been meaning to email you to check with you on that. Thanks again everyone!” 8:17:59 PM 5/26/05 “lol...Wrongbridge bought this "bagelwhich" at the locla Safeway before we went backpacking last weekend. I swear it weighed like 2 lbs! It had this massive block of cream cheese, veggies and meat. We think he killed a mt. goat with the leftovers..lol... Btw, I have used shelf stable cream cheese many times-I find it at Albertsons grocery stores in the bakery..it is dang it, that brand that makes the shmeers that you can buy in the fancy cheese section in the deli....anyhoo, they come in 3 flavors. Personally, I love the flavored cream cheeses in the tubs...especially salmon on cheese bagels!! Oh baby!! Btw...if yer ever in Port Angeles, WA, the place to go is Olympic Bagel Company...you can see the Olympic Mts towering over it-it sits one block over from Race Rd...that takes you to Hurricane Ridge. The bagels there are something you have to eat to understand ;-) Oh man...I think we need to go backpacking in the Olympics, Pixie!!” 9:34:06 PM 5/26/05 “Hey, Sarbar, my husband's brother owns some property in Joyce and plans to move there as soon as he can. MadeinTahoe, Trailtrekker is organizing a resupply for us at Vidette Meadow. She might like some help, plus it would be fun. Geologyguy from Sacto may help, too.” 11:29:02 PM 5/26/05 “Oh yeah baby!! Olympic Bagel!! :) I have some in the freezer... And I have my dad trained to pick me up a dozen everytime he rolls through P.A. I've brought those cheese cake bite things... early spring trip. I wouldn't do that in hot weather.” 1:02:13 AM 5/27/05 “Yes. And it was good.” 9:55:19 AM 5/27/05 “I love the babybels. Yum! :-) When we were in canada a few years ago, I was surprised to see that one of the restaurants had peanut butter in single serving packets, too! I'm surprised that they haven't come up with cream cheese in a tube (like the peanut butter) yet!” 11:19:59 AM 5/27/05 “I have sticky fingers when it comes to the single serve pkts of PB...I like it better than the tubes ;-) Btw..anything you desire in singeleserving? http://www.minimus.biz/default.aspx Good company!” 11:35:57 AM 5/27/05 ““I have sticky fingers when it comes to the single serve pkts of PB...I like it better than the tubes ;-) Btw..anything you desire in singeleserving? http://www.minimus.biz/default.aspx Good company!” sarbar1 12:35:57 PM 5/27/05 ignore this user Cool link! I have this sudden urge to jsut start ordering stuff!” 1:59:46 PM 5/27/05 “Olympic Bagel is on 1st and Francis. Look for the big clock tower” 2:25:59 PM 5/27/05
