SOrry I wont be able to make it. Don't know if it was mentioned, but prepare for Chiggers. My Buddy said they are at their peak this time of year. 100% deet is best. They tend to congregate around where the seam of your briefs touch your legs due to the heat generated.

Permonone is much better than DEET. I sprayed my boots and gaiters with permonone earlier this year and I haven't had a chigger or tick despite several day hikes and overnight hikes.

So, again I ask, is the campsite big enough for my enormous REI Base Camp 6, or should I bring my Clip Flashlight?

I can also bring my 16x16 screen tent if people would like. I am the King of Car-Camping gear.

bit, we have a pavillion so the screen tent may not be needed. The tent I am bringing is a 8'x10'..how big is the REI tent?

It's about the same size. I'm bringing my raised queen-sized air mattress too. No point in being uncomfortable.

I can bring the screen tent just in case, but I'll need a hand setting it up if we use it.

that shouldn't be a problem getting the screen tent setup if we need it. I am bringing a air mattress also =)

I have no idea how big the tent spots are. I'm sure your big tent will fit, though. After all, it is a campground, LOL!

As for screened-in shelters, I have one, too. Like Ewker said, we do get the pavilion, but if bugs are nasty, then the screened shelters would be nice to retreat to.

I am on the west side of Indy. From here, we'd travel south on 65, east on 64, south on 75.

edit... my trip is contingent on having enough room at the campsite for my tent.

Sheesh, that subject line sounds like a bad movie, LOL!

"Check-in" time is 11:00 and I plan to be there right around that time.

The Goat, bring your tent. There will be room.

my daughter and son in law decided to have a house warming party Saturday, and alot of family and friends are attending....so...I need to stay for it.....and I am sure y'all will be gone by the time I drive thru that area...dang...that means another 11-12 hour drive Sunday.....I am getting too old for this....I will fly next time......

Bummer, divinity.

I will bring some campfire wood. The weather has a way of changing up here daily, but overall, the past week was in 80's during the day, 60's at night. Noseeums are as thick as ever and you can expect a few horseflies in Cades Cove.

I didn't get home until about midnight last night (from Memphis), but got home just in time to hit the hot tub and watch the moon settle down behind rich mountain.

We should have a good trip.

I guess I need to go to the teenagers suck thread.....I wanted my son to come to this event ... to meet some of my neat friends... to take some wonderful pics of the area...(he has never been to the Smokeys)and so I would not have to drive 11 freaking hours on Sunday....he called his dad and he got him a plane ticket to fly home...so...not only do I have to drive home 11 hours (due to housewarming party) BUT I have to drive home alone...GRRRRRRRR.........(sorry..I'm complaining : ( )

Right now, I'm planning on coming to see you guys. I'll camp up high, though, since it's still a little warm in the low elevations.

Keep in mind that the temps in Cades Cove will be cooler than what you see for Knoxville and Blount County. The link posted above is probably based on readings at Sugarland is a good guide for Cades Cove.

Here's a good link for conditions in several areas of the park:

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=MRXRTPMRX

Notice the temps at Newfound Gap are much cooler, hence my decision to camp a little higher. LeConte is even nicer.

Anthony Creek is a good option for you guys wanting to climb to Spence Field or somewhere up on the ridge. Bote is probably better, since it may have less horse traffic. Take the AT over to Russell Field and down the Russell Field trail for a great loop. This is an all day hike of over 12 miles, but worth the effort. My kids did this hike several times when we lived in Knoxville. Bring plenty of water and a filter in the group so you can refill on the ridge, plus lunch.

The Chimney's will be packed with hikers, so I wouldn't recommend that unless you just have your heart set on it.

Abrams is a nice flat hike with good swimming holes.. Hike past the falls toward Abrams Ranger station for more solitude and some damn fine fishing spots.
