Prosecutor, - Guns do need people to fire them. It's the combination that makes them not so great in many situations. Switzerland is a wealtrhy country with few social problems. The rifle ownership is also tied to the military. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think national service is mandatory. With little by the way of a standing army I think all those who have served go onto a reserve list and are required to keep a rifle at home should a force need to be called on to defend the country or help in a national emergency, rather like the national gaurd.

Very good selective quoting there Prosecutor.

Oh, and DC as an example of violence, well yes, but I do venture outside the beltway now and again.
And there is a culture of detatchment in the US. Unless someone goes on the rampage in your street then it might as well not be happening at all. People killing each other in the cities? Well that's not your problem is it?

The point is, y2, that there are numerous examples where banning a weapon has actually resulted in the exact opposite of the intended affect (i.e. violent crime). Australia is a recent and prime example. Just do a google search on 'Australia gun ban' and you'll find several articles.

Joyce Malcolm's, a professor of history at Bentley College, book, Guns and Violence: The English Experience, details how violent crime rose in England with each new gun control measure they enacted, while violent crime decreased in America at the same time as state after state enacted laws allowing people to carry concealed weapons.

BTW, those "rifles" in Switzerland are military assault rifles, and there are more of them in homes than people in Switzerland. Nice to know that Y2 thinks crime disappears because of wealth, and that the over 24,000 heroin addicts in Switzerland is not a social problem.

prosecutor, that's the same discredited research that's always trotted out. The association of chief police officers offered strong support for tighter gun restricions while the police officers union polled its members and found no real support for the routine arming of officers with firearms. There is also widespreade public support for tight gun restrictions. Despite this Prosecutor and others continue to refer to single study compiled by an academic with a pro-gun agenda.

Discredited by whom? Gun control groups, or the political parties who promoted the gun ban? Don't make me laugh! A single study?! Do an Internet search of "Australia crime rate", "United Kingdom crime rate" or substitute 'crime rate' with 'gun control' and you'll get page after page after page detailing the failure of gun control policies. You want some neutral data? Okay. According to those gun nuts at the FBI, the murder rate in Washington D.C. has increased 134% since strict gun laws were enacted in 1976, while decreasing 2% nationally. Of the 15 states with the highest violent crime rates, 10 have the most strict gun laws in the nation.

Not good enough? Okay.
Let's look at Britain for a moment. Why the need for Victimization Crime Surveys by the Home Office separate from the Police Crime Data?... an oddly convoluted system over there to be sure, cherry-picking subjects to interview for Crime Surveys. Ahhh, but the real numbers are buried there somewhere. Hmm, odd that Homicide and Gun Crimes are included only in the supplementals, but are not part of the regular "Crime in England and Wales" reports. You can't survey the dead, right? Now who's using selective data to support their point of view? But according to those supplements....

from 1995 to 2003

Homicide rose 41%
Attempted murder rose 29%
Total Violent Crime rose 219%

Oh, so the police want gun control do they? According to Sheriff David Williams of Tarrant Cty, TX "Anyone who believes a self-protection firearm is not a deterrent to crime is simply being unrealistic...I’ve not seen any problems with concealed carry, either legal problems or inappropriate behavior, during the four years we’ve had a concealed carry law in our state." There are many more like him.

And for the pièce de résistance, how about the thoughts of one Prof. Marvin Wolfgang, a prominent crimonologist, who has said "I am as strong a gun-control advocate as can be found among the criminologists in this country. If I were Mustapha Mond of Brave New World, I would eliminate all guns from the civilian population and maybe even from the police. I hate guns--ugly, nasty instruments designed to kill people." And yet, in the Fall '95 Journal of Criminal Law and Crimonology in his article "A Tribute to a View I Have Opposed," Prof. Wolfgang concluded that the research which demonstrates the value of carrying a gun for self-protection is methodologically sound and cannot be disputed.

Wasn't this thread about knives? :)

Profesors Kleck and Lott have substantiated the findings of Professor Malcolm. I will take an academic study subject to academic peer review over selective polling anytime. So do the State legislatures in the U.S, of which all but 4 have cme over and put laws on the books allowing carry concealed.

Tuesday, May 31, 2005 Posted: 10:14 AM EDT (1414 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- A 9-year-old girl fatally stabbed an 11-year-old girl in the chest with a steak knife during a fight over a ball, authorities said.

The 9-year-old, a fourth-grader whose name wasn't released, was charged with manslaughter.

Police spokesman Paul J. Browne told The New York Times that he was "unaware of anyone younger implicated in such an act in New York City."
