Doctors call for kitchen knife ban
Friday, May 27, 2005 Posted: 9:47 AM EDT (1347 GMT)

Doctors say pointed knives owe more to tradition than culinary necessity.

LONDON, England (AP) -- Are there killers in your kitchen drawer?

Three emergency-room doctors called Friday for long, pointed kitchen knives to be banned in a bid to reduce the number of stabbings in Britain.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, three doctors from London's West Middlesex University Hospital said that at least half of stabbing cases involved kitchen knives. Long, pointed knives serve no useful purpose in kitchens, they argued.

"Many assaults are impulsive, often triggered by alcohol or misuse of other drugs, and the long pointed kitchen knife is an easily available potentially lethal weapon, particularly in the domestic setting," wrote Emma Hern, Will Glazebrook and Mike Beckett in an editorial for the journal.

"Government action to ban the sale of such knives would drastically reduce their availability over the course of a few years."

Knives are the most common murder weapon in Britain, where guns are difficult to obtain. Prime Minister Tony Blair's government has announced plans to make knives harder to buy and to raise the minimum age for ownership from 16 to 18.

Obviously those dumba$$es don't cook. I don't use short knives any more, just variations on the big chef's knives.

Violent crime has increased in the United Kingdom since they banned guns. Banning kitchen knives is just as ludicrous. One group is calling for a 5 year sentence for just carrying a knife. Go backpacking with your knife, go to prison for 5 years.

What are they going to do, go into everyone's kitchen and seize all the kitchen knives?

That's the same illogical thinking that got them into the situation they are in with their violent crime in the first place. If there is any doubt, just do a little research and see what has happened to the violent crime statistics in states that have passed "shall issue" concealed carry laws. An armed society is a polite society. Take away the Brit's knives, and they will start to bludgeon one another to death with blunt instruments.

Gee. I thought backyard swimming pools would be the next banning target, not kitchen knives.

Cigarettes, alcohol, cars and fat in food kills a lot more people than kitchen knives.

Ban them all. Make everybody eat raw carrots whole.

Ban Germs, Guns and Steel. We can go back to chipping stone knives and arrow points but we shall still kill. Keep weapons and criminals separate. If that doesn't work separate the criminals from their lives.

...but then when that first person chokes to death on a carrot, what'll be left. How about banning stupidity? BTW, what caused the Brits to ban toothpaste? :D

If they banned "pointed" kitchen knives, then would people just resort to hacking and slitting?

Historically the British have been pretty good at using knives for torture and execution. Remember Braveheart?

If we're gonna ban anything French, can we get rid of the painfully short "daisy-dukes" that they're military guys wear?

I feel violated everytime I see those guys on camp!

Hairy but cheeks are not cool hanging out of shorts.

Teh yuckieness!

The logical choice after the pointy knife will be the hammer.

Perhaps the cellphone companies will lobby to get rid of non-cell phones because people have been strangled with telephone cords.

Only long and "assault knives" need to be banned. Knives with blades over 75mm (3 inches) in length are not necessary except for very few legal purposes. Longer knives should be liscensed by the government and allowed only to butchers and cooks who have undergone certification and training.

Military looking knives with a threatening look should be banned. These "assault knives" are responsible for most stabbings in Britian.

In China and Okinawa, all swords and knives were banned at one time in their history. During the revolution(s), the population revolted by using farm implements.......hmmm.

One day he'll think of something he needs and head immediately for the nearest Wal-Mart, then his transformation will be complete...

Speaking of England, I was in London for three days in September. My wife and I loved it, but joke now that we actually did meet a few Brits. Everyone else was from some other country! Only one hotel, shop, or restaurant we visited was actually run by a native...all the rest were from India or Eastern Europe.

That's OK. Made me feel like I was back home in Los Angeles.!

Would love to go back...lots to see.
