new here
This is my first post on this board...I recently found it after seeing it mentioned several times on backpacker.com.

A little about me:
I like mountain biking, backpacking, canoeing, and general outdoor recreational opportunities.
I just moved to Pittsburgh, PA from Okemos, MI with my wife. She's a veterinarian, and I'm unemployed (hoping to go back to school eventually).
I've been mountain biking since 1999, and I started backpacking in 2004.
I'm here (on this board) because I'm always looking for new places to hike and new people to hike with.

Greetings, everyone!

The AT trip into PA on the weekend of the 4th. It's no sissy trip. Big miles. Its a 4 state challenge.

as a matter of fact, we got a trip planned for July 4th weekend and it is a doozy!

A couple of us are hiking 58 miles of the AT from just south of the VA/WV line to the PA/MD line from 7/1/05 to 7/4/05.

It's a pretty hardcore trip though. Probably be one or two 20+ mile days, but it will be really cool and a lot of fun and we'll be passing through Harpers Ferry, which is an added bonus.

Friday 7/1, we'll probably start with a small night hike to camp.

Whats up. That EarthNSky guy will walk the soles off your boots if you don't watch out.

I used to be an east coast bum and hiked with that PA bunch a couple of times - pretty good folks they be.

I live out in CO now and they are all scared to come hike the big mountains with me now.

Those are some big miles for me just yet (RE: AT trip). Besides, at this point I'm planning for the wife to come, too, but she doesn't get off work till 8pm on Fridays, so something that far off is a bit of a stretch for us.

That WRT hike looks like a strong possibility, though. I just gotta see if the wife works that weekend. If she does, I'll have to petition for going on my own. If not, I have to talk her into coming. Shouldn't be too much effort. I'll probably be bringing my dog, if noone objects. He behaves himself...even covers his own poo and knows a couple party tricks.

Before any false assumptions are made, beer is some nasty p|$$ in a bottle and I won't have any part of it! :-p (nor will I buy it)

(BTW, just moved to PA from MI...no PA connections, really...very few MI connections)

oh my bad! Welcome to PA then! Lots of great hiking here in PA! One trail that is close to you and is supposed to be awesome is the Laurel Highlands Trail. That is in PA High Country (which alas, really isn't that high, not much in excess of 2500 feet). Check it out. I am thinking of doing a snow shoeing trip there in January.

btw
you might want to check out this book by Trailtalk's very own jmitch. It has trail descriptions of 37 Pennsylvania backpacking trails and is very awesome. jmitch did an awesome job with the book and there really is no other Pennsylvania backpacking guide that bests it.

I looked at that trail earlier...apparently, it's not dog-friendly for overnighters (no dogs in shelter areas...can only camp in shelter areas kind of crap). no doggie, no hikey. I'm not mean enough to kennel my dog for a whole weekend. it'd drive him crazy.

well, you're in luck, cuz PA has the most trail miles of any state east of the Rockies. So you have lots of trails to choose from and all of them are with in an easy 2-4 hour drive from Pittsburg. Also, Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia is very cool. It is the only place in the Mid-Atlantic where you will find alpine zones. Taking dogs there is no problem. I don't think it is that far from Pittsburg.

well, they're all skeered except for bison, he says he's coming out here sometime.

oh, and embear, she's really quiet but speaks up on here now and then - she says that she's coming out here too.

Gemini thinks she's too good for Colorado - she's skipping right over it and goin to Californy for some dammed reason.

actually, I prefer to leave the alky out of my diet altogether. I'm sorry my word choice offended you, bearmagnet. Maybe I should have said something like, "I'd rather drink a bear sh|t and rotting possum carcass shake with skunk essence topping!" Is that manly enough?

CO is gorgeous. I drove through on my way to/from UT. Spent 3 months working for the USFS in the Dixie NF chasing birds around the forest. I made it a point to return to CO for future vacation trips. I'm not sure when, but it'll happen.

New trolls excuses for not hiking:

1. My old lady won't let me
2. I can't leave my cutesy chihuahua
3. Elevation gains greater than 10 ft. (The wine coolers are too heavy)
