• He is 91 and lives in Santa Rosa, California.
• He was a high-ranking official at the FBI in the early 1970s. He retired in 1973.
• He was a leading "Deep Throat" suspect by most accounts.
• He was indicted with other FBI officials in 1978 for approving other break-ins during the Nixon administration. He was convicted in 1980, and President Reagan later pardoned him.

“Just finished reading the Vanity Fair story. Very interesting. And interesting times to have lived through. I never suspected Nixon would be impeached, and he was on the way to being convicted when he resigned in disgrace. Then, just when you thought he was gone from the scene, the somb*tch reinvented himself. Go figure!

It was not Mark Felt, or even Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who brought Nixon down though. Or even Sam Ervin or Judge Sirica.

It was the fact that Nixon bugged himself and then thought the tapes were too valuable to destroy. Prior to the release of the smoking gun tape, the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee were holding out against impeachment. After that tape hit the streets, they tearfully renounced Nixon and voted to impeach.

So the real lesson of Watergate is less that the Constitution works than that you can do the crime as long as you don't bug yourself in the process of doing it, thereby providing incriminating evidence.
