Packing Beer..
What's the skinny on packing beer? Bottom of pack? I'm assuming cans over bottles? Any particular brand seem to have best weight to buzz ratio? Horizontal or Vertical? Pack around containers with something soft? How easily can the container get damaged? What's the weight per can? How many pounds does a typical six pack add to my pack weight? How many empty/open container constitutes public drunkenness?

All things considered, would packing in a flask of good whiskey be just as wonderful in the mountains? Is it true that the higher your elevation the harder it is to get a good buzz on? What's the typical time it takes for a good cold spring/stream to cool down your favorite brew? Which direction is it best to face as you are taking in "the moment"? Should you pack a few for friends? Why did I post this thread? Have I asked enough questions?

I thought it was the other way around. Higher elevation, easier to get drunk.
Anyway, I pack in red wine in a platy. But I like to stop for a nice cold beer on the way home. : )

Mmmmm ... beer... Whoo Hoo !!

About 4 lbs or so for a six pack ???. I'll hang a mesh bag on the outside of my pack. If one blows it's no big deal, and the bag can go straight into the river to chill as soon as I get to camp.

On a longer trip I just take the Rye Whiskey.... Canadian of course

I would defer all questions on this subject to bbinkley.

He appears to be the authority on packing beer.

Although, dayhiker, dunadan and cocoa williams seem to have some experience.

I've hiked in my share of beer. On a trip a year ago I took in 6 for the group on day one and saved 6 more for day two. About 4 miles and 2000' vert into the hike the side of one ruptured from rubbing against the other cans. Yep, we had to drink it.

dayhiker also knows that Free State Beer, packed in nalgene, will produce Free State Lite two days later when you put water in the container

JOSHMAN is still the leader of this field in my book...external frame pack with a spreader bar top...pack light..and in slips a 12 pack of cans

chili - that was a great trip. I hope our attempt at a football trip in Oct winds up being even half as fun.

I make mixed drinks in a bota bag. Rum and juice, tequila and juice, whatever. No carbonated beverages in botas.

Usually got a flask or two as well for longer trips.

The Canadians have the answer. They put beer palaces right on the trail. OK maybe not palaces but a beer deprived mind sees what it sees.

I have oft thought of this problem.

My solution:

Brew beer out on the trail!

Trip 1: Hike in, find a good mountain stream, and start brewing. Hike out sober.

Trip 2: A few weeks later: Continue the process by somehow bottling the beer in lightweight containers (20 oz coke bottles?)

A few weeks later:
Trip 3: Get a bunch of your friends together, and have a kegger.

Anyone up for it?

...Ah...
Pack the six in your buddies pack...(When he ain't looking...)

After a long crosscountry march followed by a cliff climb, my A team had reached our RON site....while my Team Sergeant was huffing and puffing, I reached into his pack and retrived a can of beer....then he says, "Ya know, I'd just about Suk a Dik for a beer right now..."...you could have heard a pin drop when I popped the tab on the can....

Priceless.....

I don't remember where I saw it but they have beer that comes in foil packs (like Capri Sun) now. I guess microbreweries are doing it to save on bottling costs. Now that'd be the way to go

I prefer the nitro-draught cans for beerpacking. The canned beer selection is pretty thin to begin with and IMHO, the nitro-cans represent the best of the lot. Normally I can only find Guinness at the grocery store, but if I trek to the beer store I can get Abbot Ale, my favorite.

I've packed the beer in the past but prefer to just go with a flask now days. I find it hard to conserve on the first night out with a flask and would prefer the beer. It's just to damn heavy.
