How many of you take olive oil on trips.
I have never taken it but have seen where people do. I realize it is good for extra calories but what do you add it to. Seems like it would make things to oily to eat.
Also what do you store it in while bping to keep it from leaking.

You want extra calories?

Just ask Cottonsocks for her snack bag next trip.

She packs like 20000 calories worth of junk. And it tastes better than Olive Oil.

Olive oil is great for calories and flavor. Anything you'd normally put butter on or add butter to goes great with olive oil. Put it on bread, any kind of noodles.
Extra virgin olive has the benefit of tasting great, but if you trying to get a buttery taste, it can help to use something less flavorful.

On one 11 day trip, I took a thing of butter flavored oil (made for popcorn) and used it instead of butter, it worked pretty well (although I got sick of it toward the end... it had a certain chemical taste).

on weekenders I take olive oil...not really for calories but like pedxing said..for flavor. I took a small sample bottle of shampoo...cleaned really well...fill it will the oil..screw the lid back on and drop it in my cook pot. No mess. On week long trips, I leave it at home.

Olive Oil is great for pasta, which is excellent for backpacking, being that it's actually dehydrated dough. Those Lipton noodle and pasta sides come to mind...

I carried olive oil alot on the AT. It really helps add flavor (ie fat) to meals. I add it to just about everything. On short trips it doesn't seem to matter that much. On long trips, when you are in calorie debt, olive oil makes things taste wonderful!

I always bring olive oil. It really adds nice flavor to anything you cook, like hash browns, or even just dipping some bread in it. I get a plastic bottle of an appropriate size to put it in (making sure it doesn't leak*), then pack that in a small ziploc, just in case it leaks anyway.

*Squeeze out the air. Close the bottle. Let it sit for a couple days. If it regains its shape, it leaks. If not, it doesn't.

Bring it, put it on everything.

Sunbathe in it.

Just put it in a really good container...

Tiny-size nalgene type bottles are good for oil, and the ziplock is a good precaution.

Last weekend I took a pound bag of Trader Joe's mini cheese raviolis.

I forgot the extra virgin......>8^[

Add Molly McButter
they make butter beads, as a substitute for butter in cooking...I add the beads to Olive oil and use that, it doesn't spoil, and adds a buttery flavor to the Olive Oil...

Try it...season the olive oil to taste with the butter beads...

You can shove some fresh basil, Thai basil is nice, into the oil bottle.

I use it when cooking pasta to keep things from sticking to the pot. I hate washing dishes and a little olive oil goes a long way towards making the clean up easier. Less dishes time more adventure time

I have used Olive Oil on past trips when I did more cooking other than boiling water for dehydrating meals and stuff like that. It is a good idea to put it in a small bottle and then in a small snack size ziplock to prevent a spill. It is great for my trout and I use it to make omeletes also. I dont think I should bring trout to the Gregory bald trip tho... the bears might like it also!

Olive oil and packed with dried basil and chives turns any pasta into a gourmet dish. You can dip (or spread it on) pita bread.

The small nalgenes crack, says he ruefully from experience.

My favourite calory booster is salami or pepperoni and peanut butter on pita bread. It's even better with a little salt. If you don't believe me, ask Zac, he's the nermal one.

Never leave home without it!
I always carry Olive Oil with me backpacking. I use it just like I do butter or cooking oil. As a matter of fact, it's the only oil I have in the house. REI has some great tiny bottles (non-nalgene) that work perfect and haven't leaked. I do put it down in my camp pot with a couple fresh eggs and cheese for a morning omlete and to make sure it doesn't get crushed traveling. Use Extra Virgin for non-cooking and regular for cooking. Look for the "cold pressed" for really great extra flavor.

no, you still have to say the "extra virgin olive oil" part, after you say "EVOO"!

Actually, I've been thinking of taking Olive Oil for my skin. I have to use moisturizer twice a day, and olive oil might be a good substitute for the stuff I buy at CVS.
