Hiking in Acadia?
A few friends and I are planning a week long trip in Acadia National Park up in Maine, and I really wanna get trhe scoop on this place. I would like to see as much as Acadia as possible, including the islands. I'd really like all the info I can get, there's about 5 of us going, were all gonna bring 50-75 bucks each and were hoping that with that we can park our car in the Northern Part of Mount Desert Island and go and explore. I also would like to know how much ferries cost to the islands and if it's even possible to "catch rides" to the islands. Thanks.

I went to Acadia a few years back... We only stayed 2 days and only dayhiked on the mainland. Anyway, I really liked the Beehive and Bubble Trails :)

Backcountry--no
I was there to meet up with trail friends after summiting Katahdin in '03. It was a place for dayhikers only. There was NO backcountry, primitive camping or backpacking allowed.

If you want to stay in the Park in a tent you stay at one of their two public campgrounds.

Hi THere,
Thinkbubelz & I went a few years ago.
We camped at the south end of the park, (Can't remember the site, I think it was called "Sea Wall", but it was right on the ocean--you had to go to the little store to use their showers... :-)

I think there may already be a thread about Acadia here, try searching and you should get some more info!

Make sure you go to the little island by Bar Harbor... during low tide, you can walk across to the island! :-)

Also, we rented bikes to go to the Jordan Pond, where you have to have an Ice Cream Popover... :-)

Lots of nature trails.. and If you go to the top of the mountain, I believe they say that it's the first place on the east coast where you can see the sunrise... :-) If you have time to go on one of the Ranger Talks, the talk on Tidepools is quite interesting... If you get lucky, like we did, you might even find a 10 inch "sea star" (Starfish) among the mussels on the edge of the ocean! :-)

If you like eating lobster, make sure to go to one of their "lobster pounds" where you can sit on the dock by the ocean and eat a hot steamed lobster boil.... I think the one that was recommended to us was "Beale" lobser pound (If I remember correctly!)

There are also lots of whale and puffin-watching tours out of Bar Harbor-- which can be quite interesting if you can tolerate the ocean waves... (If you're not sure, make sure you bring Bonine or Dramamine or candied ginger with you!)
