Henderson up in Arms over Big Legs

HENDERSON, NC — Some risqué art is creating a stir in Henderson.

A massive sculpture of a woman's legs has some in the Vance County city up in arms. Standing 17 feet tall and weighing 40 tons, the 4-year-old concrete legs are still creating controversy in Henderson.

"It's very offensive," one passerby said.

"It looks like a woman -- a naked woman It's horrible," another said.

To Ricky Pearce, the man who designed and built the giant sculpture, it's simply art.

"I think it's in your mind, and it might be in your heart," he said. "I look at it like is soft and warm. Something good for the neighborhood."

While city and county leaders have received numerous complaints about the statue, they say there is nothing they can do because the art is not violating any zoning ordinances. They call it freedom of expression.

"Several of my neighbors have come by and stopped and said they think its an improvement to the neighborhood," Pearce said.

Inspired by a photo of Marilyn Monroe, Pearce's "legwork" slows traffic and stirs emotions.

"The area that it's in you got churches all around," one neighbor said. "That's something that should just not be there. I don't know what their mind frame was when they did that. It's horrible."

Pearce says beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

"Maybe they are looking at the wrong angle," he said.

(In any event, I believe they/it bear/s repeating.)

Mister Tilt...........
Having first met you at TC-3 and having not seen you since......... I think you have way too much time on your hands !!! LOL !!

But, I DO appreciate ART ....... especially when it is in its purist form.

Keep up the good work... and good luck in your wanders..... it may, eventually, some day, some how, some where, lead you to a productive life. (j/k)

Thanks for the smiles !!!!
