A walk in the woods

Yesterday I was feeling a little blue...mostly I was just tired from many extra hours of work. I started day dreaming about the Sierra. In my mind I could see the old growth forests, the cascading streams, I could almost smell the crisp mountain air. So I decided that I would quit a little early and head for Sequoia NP.

I feel quite blessed to live so close to the Sierra...after driving 1.5 hours I was walking beneath Giant Sequoias and smelling that crisp air...I had been day dreaming about.

It was a great day...I saw 4 bears and 30-40 deer and the best part was walking among the giants...which tends to put everything else in perspective.

You thought this was going to be about Bill Bryson's book didn't you?

If I could tear out about 10% of that book, it would be a great book. I hate his little diversions into politics in that book. It's fine, but put it into another book.

I love that book...
I couldn't give two #&%!$s about politics for the most part so that stuff didn't bother me. I thought his humorous style and history/trivia about the places along the trail made it an excellent read.

Nice pics Michael! So, whose 1.5 hour drive is better...mine to Yosemite or your's to Sequoia?! :)

You need to get some Yosemite waterfall pictures and those Tule Elk are still out and about at the San Luis NWR... :)

One thing is for sure, even while many miles away, those high places and forests can make you whole again. It's those places that lead you to see things fresh and anew.

For me, the photos are a byproduct of the experience. When I see photos from folks, I'm looking for what was going on inside the person that took them. Not just the quality of the photos, but the message or content are important to me. What's meaningful in your outings is what the wilderness brings.

John Muir once said that nature belongs in the highest degree to those who love it most. Our photos and our experiences demonstrate that love and so in fact the Sierra belongs to us and we belong to it.

Wonderful photos.

Thanks to you all!

JVZ, 12' to 15'- we were grazing together...I swear they think I'm a deer.
They always have that panic look in their eyes til I reach down slowly ...pull a little grass and rub it in my fingers.

I startled a doe behind Log Meadow...she looked like she was going to bolt and run... I was standing close to the meadow,
looked at her, turned slowly and reached for some grass to pull...kind of ignoring her....she walked down into the meadow just past where I was standing and started grazing too.....I love this kinda stuff!

Beautiful pictures ww! I have to learn how to do slow exposure for those waterfalls on my camera. I lost the manual!

You are really lucky to be that close to that park! Man, I'm jealous. I love those big trees! Although, where I live is not too shabby either. I live right smack in the sierras and love it. I'll post a few pictures maybe tonight to a new thread so everyone can see where I live.

I know that feeling/need, too, to get out to the mountains, but I have to settle for the local state parks with oaks and ferns.

Love that buck.

This one bluff charged me at Crescent Meadow...I never saw a cub...but she looks like she has been nursing. She was laying only 10-12' from the trail. After a fresh pair of underwear I was good to go.

Lying in Wait
Most excellent! The sleeping bear shot is my favorite. For lots of reasons. Notice its ears are perked way up?

I think it was faking it to bring you in closer. Just when you snap the last shot, RAWR! GULP. There goes the camera. lololol.

Those bears eat cameras. I'm tellin' ya.

Going up to SEKI this weekend for something since I'm in town. Call me if you wanna to dayhike a peak or cruise up the Kings River for some photography. Mrs tekdude tells me it's Dad's day this weekend. =)

I heard a rumor up here that Paul Newman and Robert Redford may be teaming up again soon to do "A Walk in the Woods".

Could be just a rumor, but if that comes out as a movie, the wannabees will come out in full force.
