Deet melted my stuff
Deet leaked out in my backpack and melted a hole in my precip pants, melted the plastic on my compass, and damaged my backpack. I'll never carry deet in my backpack again - it's going to stay in a separate bag attached to the pack. Be careful with your deet.

Good Post Wing !!!
I just this morning got out all my cans of Deep Woods OFF that I have had laying around and wondered if they were any good. So, I called Johnson Wax and they said that the DEET has a shelf life of 2 years and if the container is in good shape and has not been exposed to "extreme" temperatures, another 2 years. But, she said a rule of thumb is to toss it after 3 for maximum performance of the product. You have to call them with the lot number to get the date manufactured.
I taped a string onto my small bottle of Repel-100 and it hangs on the outside of my pack for easy access. Never thought about it leaking and eating up stuff on the inside of the pack!!! GOOD POST !!! (just sorry you had to hand out the information from a bad experience)

be careful with deet around most things plastic. I had a can explode in my tackle box last year and ruined about $200 worth of baits and the box. I also had the finish rub off the forearm of a good shotgun while having wet deet on my hands.

Yeah, the skeeters up hear aren’t that strong because they get crowded out by the black flies.

Cutter Advanced was just introduced into the US. It doesn't have DEET it is a Picaridin-based repellent that the FDA just approved. It's been available in Europe for a couple of years. Supposedly as good as DEET products. Don't know what it will do if it leaks. Fleah eating disease? :-)

Good luck trying to find it though. REI has it on back order.

Every few months...
I lay out my bug suit and spray it down with Deet and Permethrin, let it dry and then pack it away.

When my dealer is dry, I take a little deet and rub it on my gums...that numbing sensation is to die for.

I don't use deet anymore. I was using it so much I could taste it in my system, even when I wasn't using it. It also melted my friends running watch, and my nailpolish.

If you wear contacts, be sure you wash your hands good. Another friend had a little on his finger, and it got on his contact. He couldn't see the next morning and had to go to ER.

IMHO ALWAYS keep your DEET in a polyethylene or acrylic container. The Deet will not effect either of those two types of plastics. Ziplock = polyethylene. I also only buy the "off" version that had the head built so it's near impossibly to depress the head accidentally. I will wash off the outside of the bag before I stick it back in my pack.

copied from a post today by Clamslayer over on Whiteblaze : "remember that steak place with the bar on rte. 7 in mass They let us stay over nite in the back. The roving wanderer stopped there for a steak and a beer. I guess he did'nt see that the 100 deet insect repelent leaking from the bottom of his pack. He liked to wear those spandex short pants.... It leaked out and disoulved the fabric of his shorts. His ass hung out and he did'nt wear underware. No one told him til he got to TomLenard shelter. I guess he thought all those people beeping thier horns on that road walk were saying hi. Aint that a kick in the corn.."

now _THAT_ is a Deet story errr I mean a Neat story

Good lord! Even Pennsy doesn't want to see Pennsy in a kilt. My only chance in a Snowy hike-off is to go hatless. Maybe the glare would slow her down and give me a sportin chance.

back on topic - as far as deet goes, I am convinced that the leadership of NBFO (Northeast Black Fly Organization) have the manufacturers of deet in their pocket. Deet is merely an appetizer for these critters and WE are the main course.

I'll still use deet sparingly for skeeters, but during black fly season, my bug shirt is always with me.

The Bug Shirt in action.
Tarabull took this pic of me chillin at our camp on the Resurrection Pass. The infamous Alaskan skeeters had me completely surrounded, but The Bug Shirt kept me bite-free.
