I like the idea of daypacking it on Sat with all that elevation gain. I'm gonna see if I can take a 1/2 day off work Friday and do this sucker. Anybody else?” 6:26:06 PM 6/05/06 “dang nabbit!!!! I want to go hiking this weekend, but the daks will probably be hard to pull off. that sounds like fun!” 6:29:46 PM 6/05/06 “Pennsy, if you do go, let me know about what time you'll get up there. My Maine trip for this weekend got postponed so it looks pretty good for me to get a backpack in. I'd bring you bear canister for this. The campsite is in the Dix Mountain Wilderness, so they aren't required, but there aren't any good trees for a hang there. ENS, if you can make it you won't regret it. The loop would take you over 5 high peaks, one with really bad views, and the other 4 with great views.” 6:46:11 PM 6/05/06 “I'll know for sure on Wednesday. I'd probably get there no later than 5 Fri afternoon. I like night hikes but I think daylight would be nice to find this campsite. I'll probably canister it, with the other option the Ursack. ENS - this isn't a Fridays off month for ya? Since it's a loop, this would be a rare trip where we could car pool. And..... I just got a XM sat radio that we could play with.” 7:05:43 PM 6/05/06 “There's also a second site closer to the Colvin Range turnoff. This site is easier to find, but I don't think it has a water source close by.” 7:15:56 PM 6/05/06 ““dang nabbit!!!! I want to go hiking this weekend, but the daks will probably be hard to pull off. that sounds like fun!” EarthNsky 6:29:46 PM 6/05/06 I know a place where you can camp this weekend. Call me!!!!” 9:17:06 AM 6/06/06 “yeah, I can't get fridays off this month and I should be home studying for a test I have to take next week on workers compensation (snore). I've been itching to hike in the Daks for a long time now. crazypace and I are talking about taking the girls out for a small hike. Mark, I'll give you a ring tonight. Zac, are you still doing the Dix Range Trip the weekend after July 4th? I am trying to get the entire week off for July 4th. Pennsy was talking about heading over to the Daks after VT and doing some peak bagging and then doing the Dix Range. If I can get off that entire week, I may head over to the Daks as well.” 10:23:35 AM 6/06/06 “i bet i know what marko's gonna say...” 10:44:20 AM 6/06/06 “"Mark, I'll give you a ring tonight." What's my wife gonna say??? (was that it?)” 10:51:49 AM 6/06/06 “nah, i figure yer gonna sell WV” 11:04:05 AM 6/06/06 “Curses!! I am tryin' to sell WVa also. The weather outlook is pretty good!!” 11:08:48 AM 6/06/06 “dang screwy weather. It's supposed to be a great weekend in Pa but it's looking rainy for the Dacks. MarkO - one of these days I'll get down to WV, but I'm itchin to do some peak bagging this weekend.” 6:39:52 PM 6/06/06 “Scratch that itch..........that's what I say!!” 7:15:50 AM 6/07/06 “OGDENSBURG, N.Y. (AP) - A man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing seven calves from a Canton farmer, sheriff's deputies said. Victor R. Gardner, 22, is accused of squeezing seven of the young cattle into the back seat and trunk of a 2000 Dodge Neon. He is charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny. Gardner had the help of an accomplice when he allegedly drove the calves to a barn in DeKalb, St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies said. Two of the calves were sold, the rest are missing and presumed dead. Gardner, who has a history of burglaries, is being held in St. Lawrence County jail without bail. --- Information from: Watertown Daily Times, http://www.watertowndailytimes.com http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0506/332525.html” 8:59:11 AM 6/07/06 “Zac - you still thinking about this? I'll rock and roll somewhere in Pa.” 7:01:44 PM 6/07/06 “Not a bad idea. With the exception of Blake Peak and Bear's Den Mountain, you what a nice clear day for the views.” 7:12:24 PM 6/07/06 9:16:45 AM 6/08/06 “Yo Pennsky, you could always rock and roll in West Virginia.” 9:19:49 AM 6/08/06 “Thanks for the link treebait. Hopefully the recovery process will continue, although the article makes it sound like this may only be a temporary thing.” 9:32:37 AM 6/08/06 “So..............................er.........................not to be selfish or anything but how does all this rain effect Black Flies? I got a report from Cranberry Lake that said all biting bugs were out en mass last weekend. I will be in the Putnam Pond/Pharoah Lake Region July 13-18. Should I bring head nets?” 8:45:41 AM 6/29/06 “"Should I bring head nets?" Kinda like a hair bag?” 8:52:32 AM 6/29/06 “Should I bring head nets?” bearmagnet 9:45:41 AM 6/29/06 YES!!!!!!!!! Blackflies breed in running water, although the last hike I did, it was the mosquitoes that were bad. The deerflies were also out, which generally keep the blackfly numbers down, but they can be worse than blackflies.” 9:02:11 AM 6/29/06 “Crap. I've never been bugged by bugs in the Dacks before. Of course, I used to wait until August and I was a smoker back in the good ole days. Thanks.” 10:57:28 AM 6/29/06 “ADIRONDACK BACKCOUNTRY ADVISORY Please be advised that due to recent heavy rains the following conditions exist in the backcountry of the Adirondacks: * Water levels are high in streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. * Low water crossings may not be accessible * Trails along waterways, and in low areas, may be flooded. * All trails are muddy and puddled. * Additional blowdown, down or bent over trees and limbs, may be found on trails. The rivers and streams in the High Peaks region rise and fall quickly making them prone to flash floods, but nothing extended.” 8:23:49 AM 6/30/06 “We can only hope that the black mud hasn't been harmed.” 8:26:38 AM 6/30/06 “What mud? There isn't mud in the Adirondacks.” 8:27:56 AM 6/30/06 “Well I guess it can’t be considered life. http://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com/include/articles.asp?articleID=3550” 6:47:01 AM 8/03/06 “Ouch.......POP goes duh weasel!! This could have been one of Bearmagnet's friends.” 7:07:45 AM 8/03/06 “Frikken tourons! Why would you "hang food" inside the shelter? I'm completly ignorant of shelter rules but I would think that's "wrong", no? I had never seen a bear in a DEC campground. Wonder if they are checking them out because of required cannister use? I wish DEC had the funds so they could require all idiots to go through orientation before entering the backcountry. last edited: 8/03/06 11:56:37 AM” 11:49:24 AM 8/03/06 “Those idiots could take leasons from The Boneheads.” 11:55:21 AM 8/03/06 “Questions: The article states: "In 2004, the DEC reported 380 bear sightings by hikers and campers in the Eastern High Peaks, followed by 177 in 2005 and 68 as of July 24 of this year." How do they know how many sightings there were by hikers and campers? Are hikers and campers supposed to report any sightings? What percentage of sightings do they think are reported? (I saw one bear near Whitehouse on the N-P a few weeks back and it never occured to me to report it to anyone official)” 12:39:25 PM 8/03/06 “in 2003 we had a ranger stop by our campsite at morning and night, due to problem bears. Someday I might have the courage to post my first ever Trip here, alone and scarred as Mr. terrorist of the High Peaks ruined my trip.........the basturd.” 12:52:13 PM 8/03/06 “They have or at least had forms at the trailheads that lead into the Eastern High Peaks for hikers to fill out reports about problem bears. The rangers in that area also had copies of these forms. It was only in this area with habitual bears that hikers were asked to report.” 12:55:14 PM 8/03/06 12:48:28 PM 8/11/06 “Almost ice fishin' season?” 2:47:36 PM 8/11/06 “I got to get through deer hunting season first.” 3:15:19 PM 8/11/06 “Housing developments in the Adirondacks, good or bad? http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/27/nyregion/27tupper.html?_r=2&pagewanted=1&oref=slogin&oref=slogin” 2:56:15 PM 10/27/06 Man Killed by Deer “I always knew they were bloodthirsty killers. http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=5669427&nav=4QcS” 6:55:39 AM 11/13/06 “Those deer parts on the wall of that joint in Schroon Lake are pretty scary!” 7:16:21 AM 11/13/06 “I haven't quite figured out why anyone would want a deer ass mounted to the wall.” 7:27:53 AM 11/13/06 “Oh yeah, it makes for a delightful dining experience to be able to look up the ass of a deer.” 7:59:59 AM 11/13/06 “Payback's a #&%!$!” 8:08:29 AM 11/13/06 “No, my dear, its a doe!” 1:00:03 PM 11/13/06 “I really hate deer.” 7:05:05 PM 11/13/06 “Police catch a theif that was living in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. Police identify woodsman Man tells police he has lived in woods for past 20 years By DON LEHMAN, dlehman@poststar.com Friday, January 12, 2007 HORICON -- Buried in the thick woods of northern Warren County, 2 miles from the nearest road, was a testament to human adaptability. A tarp-covered lean-to loaded with clothing, sleeping bags and provisions — items believed to have been stolen from seasonal homes around the Brant Lake region — was his residence, at least for the last several months. The man police believe endured the elements of the Adirondacks in a pine-branch shelter was Alan G. Como, 56, whose last known address was in Massachusetts, police said. He told police he’d lived in the woods for the past 20 years. [more]” 8:03:28 AM 1/15/07 Jump to Page << prev
