Glass Mountain (11,140') dayhike, CAView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 20 of 20 messages posted.
Got another desert peak! “Photos: http://community.webshots.com/album/362618833qtNUuz Saturday Calhiker rode his bike from Bishop to Sabrina Basin and back. I snowboarded at Mammoth Mountain. Late Saturday we met at Benton Crossing Road/Hwy 120 and caravanned to Sawmill Meadows Campground (long drive in the dark). In the morning we drove to the trailhead and dayhiked Glass Mountain. Glass Mountain got its name for the vast obsidian (volcanic glass) deposits found on its slopes. I found a chunk of brown obsidian, first time I've ever seen one. Glass Mountain is a cool peak with great 360 degree views of the Sierra, Mono Lake and the Inyo Mountains. Trailhead was at about 9,200'. Snow started at 9,800'. The summit was 11,140'. Wish I would've had my board with me!” 2:41:53 PM 6/09/05 “I used to know a guy named Mike Johnson, but I don't think he was a hiker, lol...” 2:59:42 PM 6/09/05 “That looked like a neat place with all that Obsidian! Thanks for posting the pics!” 3:07:35 PM 6/09/05 “Bitpusher - I have heard tell of a guy by the name of Mike Hunt, but I don't think he is a hiker either.” 3:15:45 PM 6/09/05 “Yo....you peak baggin' momma!! Nice lookin' hike girly....photos are great as usual....yep....wish I was there and all that.... BTW...how'd those freebie boots work out for ya? That pano with Justin off to the side is sooooo awesome (I was gonna say sweet but some might take that the wrong way).....aahhhh....he's a sweet guy anyway....I love ya dude....ha ha ha...cracking myself up... Looks like you boys and girls had some cool fun in the snow.....Corrine nice job on saving the camera...too bad about the boo boos you may gotten though....lol... Peace out my friends.....joe” 3:28:23 PM 6/09/05 “That CalHiker dude is some nice guy, huh? His hiking partner hits the deck and the first thing he thinks of to do is take a picture!!” 4:36:08 PM 6/09/05 “Hi Snow Nymph, I planned all my permits early, and coming up for a week on the 19th. I saw your note that Calhiker was up at Sabrina, I'm looking for info on conditions from Blue Lake to Moonlight Lake. I'm thinking about going if the river crossings aren't nuts. Thanks, Doug” 6:06:51 PM 6/09/05 “Gorgeous series, Snownymph! Thanks much for sharing :)” 6:37:48 PM 6/09/05 “Gotta love those desert peaks - Nice pictures as usual Snow Nymph. Lots of snow still. I'm headed off to do some postholing in the Spring Mountains near Vegas this weekend.” 1:28:24 AM 6/10/05 “Really cool Snowy...love the pix!” 1:54:39 AM 6/10/05 “awesome! You pics make me jeolous!” 10:00:39 AM 6/10/05 “When it's raining here (and it does that a lot) I can always go to the Sierra and "hike" with SN and CH. Very nice trek indeed, loved the shot of cool colors on White Mt.” 10:06:56 AM 6/12/05 “The Mike Johnson entry was funny. Someone responded to it, but I didn't post the picture. I might look him up, maybe he still lives in Mammoth? Stratusloop: The boots sucked. No support, felt every rock I stepped on, the rim kept digging into my ankle, made my feet hurt. I love my Raichle's, so I hope I can find at least one pair of the new ones I bought. It was really windy on the saddles, and even Calhiker got blown over. I was taking pics when I postholed and fell forward. I was still in the snow, so no booboos. Everytime we fell we laughed pretty hard. A few years back I did that with a full pack, landed on my shoulder and my glasses hit a rock, but I saved my bowling arm (I was bowling 4 leagues a week at the time). The glasses were ruined, but it saved my face. HikinMike: I don't think I've ever hiked in obsidian like that! It was sparkling in the sun as we hiked up (pictures don't capture it). Bowlderman, he learned that from me. We make sure the other is ok before we snap the photos. We were always ready with the cameras on the snow. I got a few of him down! Doug, how have you been? I'll ask him, but he only rode his bike up there and back to Bishop. From what I remember, the big creek crossing is just past Dingleberry Lake. I crossed it one year (crotch deep for me, knee deep for most) and almost got stuck because the water was so cold my legs wouldn't move. Most years there are big boulders to cross on. Probably not this year, though. Sol: I'll see you in ~32 days?” 11:08:22 PM 6/13/05 BowlderMan... “Anyone who's hiked with Snow Nymph before should know that if you DON'T take a picture when she biffs in the snow, then you're gonna get yelled at! Doug, I only did a bike ride to Lake Sabrina from Bishop, so I don't know about trail conditions beyond that point. Sure is beautiful up there!” 2:00:22 AM 6/14/05 SN “I'm be on Phil's Sierra Rendezvous. It would be a pleasure to meet you on the trail. Are you and SD coming to the Wheezers and Geezers Reunion afterglow party at the Dow Villa?” 6:56:40 AM 6/14/05 “ha ha ha ha.....Dingleberry Lake....crackin' me up....ok sorry for the second grade humour.....carry on.....” 7:02:58 AM 6/14/05 Calhiker... “I have video of SN stuck in the snow. Tekdude and I had to dig her out because her snowshoe got caught in some branches buried in the snow. A still shot from the video... ”3:10:20 PM 6/14/05 “Ha! I often wonder if my namesake "bowlder" up in Yoho had done its job if I would have stopped for a photo first before removing the body.....” 3:45:17 PM 6/14/05 “Beautiful pictures of a beautiful spot.. Thanks for sharing....I bet seeing all that obsidian was pretty cool. SN..I too have done that with snowshoes..I tripped once clipped the tip of the snowshoe on a branch I did not see..it is very easy to do..those down branches just get so buried it is hard to see them all....I felt so silly when I did it...thats a great picture hikin mike...glad you two were there to help her!” 7:17:44 PM 6/14/05 “Calhiker is right. I slipped while crossing a deep fast moving creek by Second Recess (camera was in the top pocket, but I kept it above the water). SnowDude had the video camera, but didn't get pictures of me falling/crossing. There was nothing he could do to save me from where he was (wide crossing) so he should have at least taken a picture. Yeah, I got mad at him for not taking it. I got a few of him, and the water took him down too! Sol, I will be backpacking with another group the weekend of the party, so I'll be with your group only on the 16-17th. Stratusloop, guess we both have 2nd grade minds cuz that's what I think everytime I hear it too! LOL! HM, that was a pretty deep hole to dig out! I remember falling a few times on that trip and felt like a turtle. The snow was awesome on that trip! I want to go back some day and go up to Kidney Lake. I hear there's some good skiing above the lake! Bowlderman, you came close to removing 3 bodies! A 7-10 split? Good thing our reflexes were quick! MiT, I'm glad they were there to help. That trip made me realize that I shouldn't go solo in the snow. There was no way I could have gotten out myself the way I got stuck. And yes, the obsidian was very kewl!” 2:14:03 AM 6/15/05
