The kid is on east Dix and it's not raining or snowing” 4:43:06 PM 6/09/05 “Lol!” 4:59:03 PM 6/09/05 “funny kid. bet he is a blast to hike with” 8:01:30 PM 6/09/05 Never been. “I'd like to hike the Daks, but it will likely be some time before I can do it. Strange looking peaks, for the East. They just don't look like typical Appalachian peaks (even for northern Apps). They appear to still be undergoing some kind of uplift or something. They've always just looked so STEEP and rugged to me--far more so than other eastern ranges.” 9:17:42 PM 6/09/05 “The Adirondacks are their own range, separate from the Appalachians by the Mohawk Valley. You are correct in that they are still growing. Apparently they grow around half an inch a year. They are very different than the rest of the eastern mountains.” 9:26:03 PM 6/09/05 “Yup, the Adirondacks are completely separate from the Appalachians. They are actually a southern extension of the Canadian Shield. The Adirondacks are young mountains (younger than most of the Rocky Mountains) made up of very old rock (some over 1 billion years old). Here’s a link that will probably tell more than you ever wanted to know about the geology of the region. http://gretchen.geo.rpi.edu/roecker/nys/adir_txt.html” 9:37:11 PM 6/09/05 I'll be damned. “I THOUGHT there was a reason they looked so different from the Apps. Thanks, folk!” 9:38:51 PM 6/09/05
