Eating Healthy is Expensive!View Messages“I grow my own veggis in my small back yard. It substains me well enough. I also forage in the woods (I grew up forageing wild foods and on hunted game). It is in teh winter and early spring I need veggies from teh store and unlesss I want to drive an hour into chicago to go to trader joes, im pretty much screwed on good organic cheap produce. I want to actually take up canning and preserving my excess from the garden, but as I have one day off about every two weeks...I have a bit of a time restraint. last edited: 6/14/05 9:26:23 PM” 9:25:50 PM 6/14/05 “Has anyone heard about the people in Okanawa, Japan that live a long cancer free life? They drink a ton of green tea and eat more fish and veggies and yes, they eat rice, yes, the dreaded carb!!!! They also tend to walk around more and socialize which makes them healthier and less depressed in old age. The key is to eat less animal protein and more veggies. My husband says his friend eats his veggies first to fill up so he will eat less meat. Things like green tea and soy milk are only supposed to help if you drink them every day and with green tea, you probably have to drink a lot of it every day. Reports tell what food is good and prevents cancer in rats, but they never tell you how much you have to consume.” 10:14:21 PM 6/14/05 “Can eating anti cancer foods like broccoli change your genetic marker for cancer? I don't believe it can, so how can eating these foods help unless you ingest cancerous foods and the anti cancer foods cancel them out????? Anyone have any ideas about this?” 10:17:55 PM 6/14/05 “Sarbar-- I know that Carrageenan is seaweed, but from what I understand, it can sometimes contain a naturally occuring MSG which can trigger an MSG reaction... Soy beans are also (unfortunately) natural sources of MSG as well... My friend can't eat anything with any type of MSG (natural or sythetically occuring as a by-product of processing.) For years the doctors were baffled by why she was having digestive problems (one small roll would cause her to feel full) and severe migraine headaches (at one point they thought she had pancreatic cancer!)... When she finally figured out that MSG was the culprit, she cut out everything that could possible contain MSG out of her diet... She is now the healthy (and proud) mom of a little girl... :-)” 1:19:03 AM 6/15/05 “Ewker, I don't use soymilk. There have been tons of instances of little girls developing breasts because of soy products and the natural estrogen that occurs in them. I don't generally drink milk, just use it for cooking and Abby drinks some. So, I stick with regular 2%. Might have to go back up to whole though, Abby's lost weight this year and held steady at 37# for a year before that. The kid's a string bean. First produce planted this spring was harvested from our garden yesterday, french breakfast raddishes. Man are they spicey due to our drought! Woo-WEE!” 7:08:12 AM 6/15/05 “Sass... Actually, I was trying to say that I'm in that boat now. So, I get my gallons of cheapo milk unless there is a sale or special on the organic. Sometimes there isn't fat to cut from the budget. I feel blessed that things are gettin better. With 3 kids in the house, it would be nice to be filling the frig with the best stuff. "Pedxing, very true about cutting up your own birds and skipping the soda. But there are plenty of folks out there, myself included who already do stuff like that and still can't pay $2.99 per dozen free range organic eggs and $2.89 for a 1/2 gallon of organic milk." Sassafras” 8:13:06 AM 6/15/05 “I look foward to the day I can use real butter, instead of the crap in a tub stuff for 80 cents lol” 8:17:10 AM 6/15/05 “Jeez..we pay $3 out here for CHEAP milk!! All I care about my milk is that it diesn't have hormones and similar stuff. I buy mine from a local dairy.” 9:02:26 AM 6/15/05 “Most Asian restaurants round here (Montréal) offer MSG-free options. I won't eat substitutes of any kind, no aspertame, margarine, fakesoymilk or tofu 'burgers'. I eat mostly fresh and varied natural diet - organic when I can get it. My buddy has chickens and they wander about all day, eating everything that moves. The eggs are unbelievable - dark orange yolks that taste like the meat they are - much higher in protein as well as omega 3. BTW, barbequeued kid is to die for (sorry, TheGoat).” 9:18:49 AM 6/15/05 “I hear ya Ped! I found that Costco is selling organic milk now. It's still almost 1 1/2 times more pricey than normal cow's milk though. You just do the best you can with what you have. Our friend who works for the dept of ag and also owns a dairy farm says that those hormones and antibiotics, etc can't be found in the food and milk, etc from cows.” 11:36:48 AM 6/15/05 “anyone shop at Wild Oats Markets. That is the big store around here. We do have a new markert calle Fresh Market but I haven't been there yet. I have started buying some items in bulk like couscous, instant refried beans or black beans, dehydrated veggies for soups etc. I wish I knew what half of the bulk items they sell are used to make. last edited: 6/15/05 12:01:37 PM” 11:53:18 AM 6/15/05 “Sass: I work at a food coop to get the discount in order to afford the healthful stuff, but it is still very pricey (although once a month I get 30% off and then I stock up on some things).” 12:38:28 PM 6/15/05 “BTW, 2 litre peanut butter jars rock for storing stuff in bulk.” 12:50:22 PM 6/15/05
