Hi im sort of new here

“Ive been on the tt about a month or so now-but have not done a newbe thread -so here goes-Im a 52 yr. old male-25 yr. prof. firefighter in central new york-I do a lot of dayhiking around this area and a lot of car camping with my girlfriend-did some bping in the 80s with some fellow workers-no one else here seems to hike now-we did some bping in the adirondacks with 60 pound packs then no wonder they lost interest-hope to eventually get back into some bping but all I have at the moment is a kelty ext. frame pack that is 25 yrs. old- I am amazed at the distances some tters travel to go on a trip-I was reading with interst about the ithaca trip -that seems to have now died-but I hope to eventually get in on a trip-just want to say hello to everyone-”

“we do lots of trips in the Catskills and northern PA, those places should be semi close to you. TT trips are very fun, challenging and rewarding and you always meet the best folks.”

“I read the posts on last years ithaca trip sounded like a lot of fun-while in pa. some years back- a friend took me to the grand canyon of the east -quite a sight-ive only been down by the catskills once (bethel to check out the woodstock 20 yr. ann.)-the carcamping is for my girl friends benefit -But the fingerlakes national forest is a good place to do it-there are places along the road with tables and fire rings that are not close to anyone else -we set the tent up there and I day hike-”

I’m 48 and originally from northern NJ (born in Hackensack). I used to hike in Harriman and the Adirondacks (around the Lake George area and Mt. Marcy) as a kid. I've hiked the AT around the Greenwood Lake, NY area. I’ve now lived in Gainesville, Florida (GO GATORS!) for 30 years. You’ll find plenty of trips here. I haven’t gone on a trip where everyone (and I mean everyone) wasn’t fun to be around.

We hold a trip down here every year in Ocala National Forest. If you’re interested in escaping NY during those cold, dreary, gray-skies days, let me be the first to invite you to Florida next winter. We usually go the weekend after hunting season ends. This is usually around the first weekend in February.”

I agree with both statements.”

“I think both are true too. I've learned about lots of places thru TT that I'd have never heard of otherwise.

Another example is that I was shocked to find out that Cincinnatti is the same distance from the Smokies that I am. Cincy, that's in OH and just way up there somewhere.”

“The Northeast has many fine areas which I have experienced on several drive and hike trips and hope to take more.

Its nice to see entire counties that appear to have not had a new house constructed in decades where it can confidently be felt that the landscapes will remain much as they are.

Maybe, after the current building boom, a more static situation will be present in the South.

“It always hurts to see open areas and woods turned into developments-the places you can go to to get away seem to diminish in number and area-things have been somewhat stable around here-but a number of people have left for the south because of high taxes and the weather-I really enjoy the winters -there is a beauty and remoteness not found in the other seasons-”
