“Ive been on the tt about a month or so now-but have not done a newbe thread -so here goes-Im a 52 yr. old male-25 yr. prof. firefighter in central new york-I do a lot of dayhiking around this area and a lot of car camping with my girlfriend-did some bping in the 80s with some fellow workers-no one else here seems to hike now-we did some bping in the adirondacks with 60 pound packs then no wonder they lost interest-hope to eventually get back into some bping but all I have at the moment is a kelty ext. frame pack that is 25 yrs. old- I am amazed at the distances some tters travel to go on a trip-I was reading with interst about the ithaca trip -that seems to have now died-but I hope to eventually get in on a trip-just want to say hello to everyone-” 6:58:46 PM 6/14/05 “we do lots of trips in the Catskills and northern PA, those places should be semi close to you. TT trips are very fun, challenging and rewarding and you always meet the best folks.” 7:02:12 PM 6/14/05 “Car camping???? Are you sure you are on the right site? Just kidding. Welcome. The last Ithaca trip was GREAT!!” 7:02:25 PM 6/14/05 “Check out the Grand Canyon trip in Sept. Looks to be a great trip.” 7:08:27 PM 6/14/05 “yeah, the PA Grand Canyon should be with in a three hour drive for you and it is not a difficult hike.” 7:13:16 PM 6/14/05 “That is why I am coming!” 7:16:54 PM 6/14/05 “I read the posts on last years ithaca trip sounded like a lot of fun-while in pa. some years back- a friend took me to the grand canyon of the east -quite a sight-ive only been down by the catskills once (bethel to check out the woodstock 20 yr. ann.)-the carcamping is for my girl friends benefit -But the fingerlakes national forest is a good place to do it-there are places along the road with tables and fire rings that are not close to anyone else -we set the tent up there and I day hike-” 7:26:11 PM 6/14/05 “firefighter eh? so...your pretty handy with a hose...huh? :)” 9:18:30 PM 6/14/05 “Welcome aboard. If you are ever in GSMNP I will be glad to dayhike with you.” 9:23:57 PM 6/14/05 “I have put out my share of fires-I am an emt most of our calls are medical-chili where is gsmnp-this may be obvious to most tters -but when I read some of the trip reports a lot of times the state is not mentioned so I have no idea where they are-” 5:32:25 PM 6/15/05 “I have put out my share of fires-I am an emt most of our calls are medical-chili where is gsmnp-this may be obvious to most tters -but when I read some of the trip reports a lot of times the state is not mentioned so I have no idea where they are-” 5:32:28 PM 6/15/05 “I have put out my share of fires-I am an emt most of our calls are medical-chili where is gsmnp-this may be obvious to most tters -but when I read some of the trip reports a lot of times the state is not mentioned so I have no idea where they are-” 5:32:29 PM 6/15/05 “sorry about the triple message I am still learning to use the computer--” 5:33:45 PM 6/15/05 “you don't have to be sorry around this bunch :>)” 7:55:09 PM 6/15/05 “gsmnp = great smoky mountain national park north carolina/tennessee” 2:55:33 PM 6/16/05 “You'll fit right in fingerlake (I like to shorten long trail names but finger just doesn’t seem appropriate). I’m 48 and originally from northern NJ (born in Hackensack). I used to hike in Harriman and the Adirondacks (around the Lake George area and Mt. Marcy) as a kid. I've hiked the AT around the Greenwood Lake, NY area. I’ve now lived in Gainesville, Florida (GO GATORS!) for 30 years. You’ll find plenty of trips here. I haven’t gone on a trip where everyone (and I mean everyone) wasn’t fun to be around. We hold a trip down here every year in Ocala National Forest. If you’re interested in escaping NY during those cold, dreary, gray-skies days, let me be the first to invite you to Florida next winter. We usually go the weekend after hunting season ends. This is usually around the first weekend in February.” 6:21:14 AM 6/17/05 “fingerlake - go back and think about what Spirit is REALLY asking you. Hey arc- how's it going?” 7:15:05 AM 6/17/05 “hey fingerlakes... i was up in Ithaca last summer and was amazed at how nice that area is, I never woulda thunk that NY State would be so appealing, having grown up in the south and all.....” 8:14:44 AM 6/17/05 “it's amazing how ignorant many southerns are of the north/northeast.” 8:57:42 AM 6/17/05 “It's amazing how ignorant many northerners are of the south/southeast.” 9:01:38 AM 6/17/05 “oh my, that was an original thought dayhiker.” 9:30:57 AM 6/17/05 ““it's amazing how ignorant many southerns are of the north/northeast.” the management 9:57:42 AM 6/17/05 ignore this user -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “It's amazing how ignorant many northerners are of the south/southeast.” dayhiker 10:01:38 AM 6/17/05 ignore this user I agree with both statements.” 9:35:25 AM 6/17/05 “I think both are true too. I've learned about lots of places thru TT that I'd have never heard of otherwise. Another example is that I was shocked to find out that Cincinnatti is the same distance from the Smokies that I am. Cincy, that's in OH and just way up there somewhere.” 9:41:11 AM 6/17/05 “Same with me, I never even heard of the Southern Sixers until I started posting on TT.” 9:43:59 AM 6/17/05 “You were probably equally shocked that there are more high mtns in the SE than the NE.” 9:48:07 AM 6/17/05 “PS. I'm looking forward to the work trip I have coming up in the NE. I'm working on a project in NH right now.” 9:55:17 AM 6/17/05 “Noobie...” 9:55:47 AM 6/17/05 “I know what spirit was asking I was just trying to be nice--” 7:22:21 AM 6/20/05 “The Northeast has many fine areas which I have experienced on several drive and hike trips and hope to take more. Its nice to see entire counties that appear to have not had a new house constructed in decades where it can confidently be felt that the landscapes will remain much as they are. Maybe, after the current building boom, a more static situation will be present in the South. last edited: 6/20/05 8:27:08 AM” 8:24:26 AM 6/20/05 “It always hurts to see open areas and woods turned into developments-the places you can go to to get away seem to diminish in number and area-things have been somewhat stable around here-but a number of people have left for the south because of high taxes and the weather-I really enjoy the winters -there is a beauty and remoteness not found in the other seasons-” 9:10:12 AM 6/20/05
