Tsunami Threat Today - Tuesday
There was a big earthquake, 7.4, off the coast of CA, close to the Oregon border. It may create a tsunami, now, at 8:20pm WA time.

The warning is in effect for Mexico up to Vancouver, B.C.

They are saying to not take any chances and seek high ground right now!!!!!

Crap. I had planned to camp on the coast this weekend. They expect it to hit now or never, but what about after shocks? I don't think I want to go out there and take any chances this weekend.

On some WA coast beaches, there is no higher ground for miles, or you can be camping in a cove that has a bank behind you that cannot be climbed.

I do. Of course the wave would have to be at least 630' high just to get my shoes wet. 8D

SEATTLE -- One of the major ways of alerting Washington coastal residents to a tsunami -- the NOAA weather and hazard alert radio -- failed during the West Coast warning on Tuesday night.

The meteorologist in charge of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration office in Seattle said the warning didn't get out because a phone line was out between the office and the Coast Guard.

Chris Hill said his office will be looking for ways to back up the system to the transmitters to make it more reliable.

George Crawford of the state department of Emergency Management told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that coastal residents should have evacuated.

In LaPush, Police Chief Bill Lyon said when the warning siren failed to go off automatically, he activated it by hand. He said officers and firefighters evacuated more than 600 residents to higher ground.

Neah Bay Police Chief T.J. Green said a recently installed tsunami siren did not go off.

There was an 8.0 or larger earthquake off of New Zealand, so they've issued tsunami wanings for NZ and Fiji.
