“Spirit, the earthquake is off the coast of Crescent City, but they did not say it caused a disturbance on land. I've got the news on and will keep you advised of any new info.”

Updated: 11:58 p.m. ET June 14, 2005EUREKA, Calif. - A major earthquake struck Tuesday night about 80 miles off the coast of northern California, prompting a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site.

A tsunami warning was in effect from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, KCBS radio reported.

A hotel employee in Crescent City told NBC the quake “shook the heck out of me” and some telephone lines were reported down.

“I managed to contact my ex-roomates (yes, they are hippies but the nicest people ever, certainly not freaks!) they felt the shakin bad but nobody that they know of was hurt. The tsunami warning was lifted.”

“Im in San Diego. The tsunami warning was posted last night along with the location of the quake. It's understandable for the people near the epicenter (Eureka, Cresent) to be alarmed, but the fact that there were actually people in my own town concerned about this was pathetic. It would be geographically impossible for a swell originating from that quake to strike our coast. Anyone with a basic knowledge of swell directions and the resulting wave potential knows this. The December tsunami tragedy now has our own warning system in overkill mode.”
