it sounds like Brown Recluses rarely occur in Pennsylvania and they don't occurr naturally. The isolated occurences of Brown Recluses that have been found here were the result of them being transported in from areas where they occurr naturally. From what I am reading, you are more likely to see a brown recluse inside in a warm place than outside.

That was an interesting spider though. I didn't feel like messing with it. I do remember it being pretty hairy and it also had a yellow bottom like a recluse.

OMG, WTF is that? Image URL says Brown Recluse bite. I didn't know they were that toxic!

I don't think it's a brown recluse, but that the hell do I know. Here is a pic of one from the web:

I am going to play a bit this morning and see if I can ID that bugger.

the pic I posted is a brown recluse from the web. I didn't get a pic of the one we found on the trail yesterday unfortunately. He was a big brown hairy spider with long legs and a yellow belly. He looked alot like a brown recluse but with a little more hair.

perhaps he is a "yet to be identified highly venomous spider" and if that is the case, I will dub him "Evil Pennsylvania Dutch Killer Spider"

my friend got bit by one. got a nice bit of scarring, but nothing as bad as that picture. ens, do you have any idea how long that person let it go before they sought treatment? had to have been several days, i would think

Infor on Brown Recluse bites
Ya'll might want to check this site out. It gives statistics to bites in all the states where they can be found and PA has 24.

Also it goes into gross pics of bites and the stories behind them

hey CP, did you have any problems with your pack hurting your hips this time? I didn't have any problems this time. My pack worked like a charm. The friggin heat sucked today.

hey, on the weekend of the 27-28th of this month, which day is that picnic. I have to take a licensing exam Saturday morning for my job, but Sunday, I would like to dayhike another section of the AT. It won't be as hot as it was today, God Willing.

I wanted to go to the Catskills, but I have to take a licensing exam for work now that Saturday, so I had to bail. Crazypace has a picnic that weekend. So it'll likely be an AT dayhike instead.

I actually had a little more weight in my pack this. I wonder if that had anything to do with it. My pack was really light last week on the AFT.

I'll be able to hike on Sunday the 28th all day or the afternoon on Saturday the 27th. My exam will probably get done around 11ish, so I could be at a trailhead by 1 on Saturday. Sunday, I can hike any time.

there are three sections that are possibilities for me.

Cumberland Gap - Boiling Springs to Bernhisel Bridge
Berks County - PA 645 to PA 183, crossing 501
Berks and Lehigh County - Hawk Mtn Road to PA 309

I was just thinking about it, wow, after this weekend, you are almost done with the AT in PA. Knock out the Gap section as a dayhike (we can pretty much trail run it). The do the Shippensburg Rd to 94 section as an overnighter. the Crazypace does Pennsylvania and icecream party afterwards hike.
I need Shippensburg Road all the way to Bernhisel Bridge.

Wow!! I just drove a stock car around Pocono raceway! I hit 168 mph. It was freeegin awsome!!! I would do that again in a second.

Oh yea, the hike thing - I can do sunday as a dayhike. I'd rather stay kinda close. So I'll do the hawk mt section with ya.
I'm planing the cumberland valley section with michele on the weekend of sept 10. we are staying at that bed & breakfast in boiling springs, so if you can, join us for that dayhike. Then we just have to schedule that last section afterwards.

oh wow, my fastest speed ever is 105. 168 dang!

so I wonder if we should do 309 to Hawk mtn road or hawk Mtn Road to 309. climb or descend? If it's anywhere near as hot as it was this weekend, probably be better to descend.

We did it. It's a easy stroll along flat - no rocks- well groomed trail. But I'll gladly do it again.
BTW - I'm looking at oct 8th weekend to finish the pine grove section. check and see if you can do that weekend.
