I don't wanna say now what I think. :( Do I have to?” 7:39:33 PM 6/16/05 “nice report and pics, Artex!” 7:43:42 PM 6/16/05 “Nice trip. The south north hike is great. I am doing it in mid july with my wife and kids (ages 10 and 7). We'll stay at Mizpah and Lakes. I have done it probably a dozen times running in both diretions. Once with my parents in 1980 when we were doing a hut traverse. We got started from Mizpah, got caught in awesome thuder and lightening all the way across the ridge to Lakes. I was running from Krumkrotlz (sp??) patch to patch and lying on the ground. My mom was yelling at me to wait for them (as if!!!). I would crouch in the scrub as they picked their way toward me. There was really nowwhere to hide up on the ridge. It was a pretty quick trip considering they were in their 50s at the time! A scary scary traverse under stupid conditions. We shouldn't have done it, but were hung up on making our reservation at Lakes. The next day was worse, from a different perspective. We hiked Lakes to Madison in 40 degree heavy fog. We were all wearing our wet COTTON from the day before. When I arrived at madison i was completely hypothermic. It took me several hot chocolates, wrapped in wool blankets to even begin shivering. And when I finally started it was uncontrollable. Ahhhhh Parents . . .. I hope to do the same for my kids.” 9:25:37 AM 6/17/05 “Great trip report and pictures! It made me quite homesick though, I miss my college days of wandering the Whites.” 9:55:53 AM 6/17/05 “Enjoyed the report and pictures. Isn't Mt. Washington the place where they recorded the lowest temp in the lower 48?” 6:24:30 PM 6/17/05 “Thanks for the cool words, everyone. Solitary Hiker, I don't think so. But it does have THE worst weather in the world, according to meteorologists. Below are some stats taken from their weather observatory's website: Highest wind (world record, April 12, 1934): 231 MPH Average wind velocity for the year: 35.3 MPH Lowest temperature (state record, January 1934): -47°F Highest temperature (August 1975, June 2003): 72°F Average temperature for the year: 26.5°F Average annual snowfall: 256 inches Maximum snowfall in a season (1968-69): 566.4 inches Maximum snowfall in a calendar year (1969) 495.2 inches Winds exceed hurricane force (75 MPH) on an average of 104 days a year The summit is in the clouds about 60% of the time Fog is reported (for at least part of the day) over 300 days a year” 6:32:01 PM 6/17/05 “the weather on Mt. Washington makes the weather on Mt. Mitchell look like a picnic and the weather on Mitchell is no picnic.” 7:05:47 PM 6/17/05 “Excellent Trip report and Pics, Thanks for sharing.” 6:18:27 AM 6/18/05
