Hiking in the rain forest
Hi,

I'm new here. I was just wondering if any of you have been to the Amazon. I'm leaving for the Peruvian Amazon later this month and am not sure what I should take by way of shoes and clothing. I have been told that, while we will be very near the equator, it gets quite cool in the jungle at night. I have also heard horror stories concerning calve-munching mud and the perils of sweaty feet...if you have suggestions as to how these two foot-related problems might be remedied I would greatly appreciate it.

Anyhow, thanks for any information you are willing to share.

Thanks

Cool name, Datura. One of my favorite flowers.

Roseymonster and his wife hiked around S. America. Do a search of the archives, you should be able to find it. I don't know how much Amazon he covered, though.

Jungle Wear
Haven't been to that jungle, though I will be there in july. The jungles I have been to (Sumatra, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Belize, Cuba), I've always done the same thing everywhere, if it's wet, wear Teva's/Sandals like the locals, or barefoot, if it's real muddy. Your going during the dry season, (relatively), it can still rain til your knee deep in it. Wearing sandals will allow your feet to dry out somewhat, and you'll be able to walk farther and longer during your hike. Most trips there don't involve alot of hiking, like in the mountains, most of your travel will be by canoe/boat, with short hikes. It may be cool at night(dress accordingly, long sleeve shirt and pants (hat), that's all), but the humidity and the bugs will probably be your biggest concern. The locals or tour operator, can be more specific, once you get there.Mosquito net/Tarp helps in pinch, a jungle hammock is the way to go if your doing any camping. You may do some wildlife viewing at night/early morning/sunset, when the jungle is most active (Night Hikes are cool in the jungle, like night diving, creepy, and unpredictable, but exciting). Are you doing Manu, from Cuzco? I hear it's great. I hope this helps. Enjoy!
