Makes perfect sense to me, Miss Opie... :-)

I've been to over 40 weddings... I will think about it and give you some ideas... ;-)

Although it was very obscure, We used "Devoted to Me" by Carly Simon (liked the words.)

I seem to remember one friend using a Mary Chapin Carpenter re-make of a John Lennon song, "Grow Old With Me" The words were pretty nice and it was on a CD with country re-makes of John Lennon's songs. The CD is called: 'Working Class Hero - A Tribute to John Lennon'

The nice thing about Mary Chapin Carpenter is that she has less of a country twang, her voice has more of a gentle, folk-song quality. I've heard the song and it's very reflective... :-)

Here's a link with the lyrics:
http://www.lyricsdepot.com/john-lennon/grow-old-with-me.html

At Last by Etta James is pretty romantic... :-) (on the Soundtrack of Northern Exposure--and other CDs, I'm sure)

What kind of music do the two of you like? That might help get the ball rolling! Do you have a favorite song from a movie or something like that?

Are you looking for first dance songs or a certain song for the ceremony? I have played at a ton of weddings (piano) and have lots of suggestions if it is for the ceremony.

no this is the "first dance"
I heard that etta james song is nice..i'll have to find it.

I want something classier, that will never grow old. Alan Jackson's newest boot stomper just won't do it for me.

I like Classical and Techno.

She likes honkey tonk

we're screwed

Opie, At Last (Etta James) is great, but what about something like Crazy - Patsy Cline (written by Willie Nelson). It is classic, but kinda country.

lyrics from ALL-4-ONE:
I swear by the moon and the stars in the sky
and I swear like the shadow that's by your side

I see the questions in your eyes
I know what's weighing on your mind
You can be sure I know my part
Cause I stand beside you through the years
You'll only cry those happy tears
And though I make mistakes
I'll never break your heart

Chorus
And I swear by the moon
And the stars in the sky I'll be there
I swear like the shadow that's by your side I'll be there
For better or worse
Till death do us part
I'll love you with every beat of my heart
And I swear

I'll give you every thing I can
I'll build your dreams with these two hands
We'll hang some memories on the wall
And when (and when) just the two of us are there
You won't have to ask if I still care
Cause as the time turns the page
My love won't age at all

And I swear (I swear) by the moon
And the stars in the sky I'll be there (I'll be there)
I swear (and I swear) like the shadow that's by your side
I'll be there (I'll be there)

For better or worse
Till death do us part
I'll love you with every beat of my heart
And I swear

And I swear (I swear) by the moon
And the stars in the sky I'll be there (I'll be there)
I swear (and I swear) like the shadow that's by your side
I'll be there (I'll be there)

For better or worse (better or worse)
Till death do us part I'll love you
With every single beat of my heart
I swear I swear I swear

OPIE - Painting MO's preferences as redneck is going to work wonders for this negotiation.

We used Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic." Fantastic song, so far the marriage has been good too.

Van's other stuff: Tupelo Honey, Have I Told You Lately, etc. is pretty good too.

The Willy version of "Crazy" would be pretty country...

I don't HAVE to have a country song. You are right dayhiker. He is just trying to make me look redneck. I just want a song that will make my heart flutter. It's not that I don't like classic songs but Nat Cole does not do that to my heart for a first dance song. I want a song that when I listen to it I think of Randy. I want a song with meaning.

Another vote for "Into The Mystic" I'd go with the original Van Morrison, but the Wallflowers version is good too.

Of course that was the song they used in "American Wedding" so people might think you're copyin' the movie.

But it makes such a great first song I'd go with it anyways.

OTOH - will this matter 10 years from now? Just remember, all of this is the first step. It's easy to get caught up in the planning and get focused on the wedding instead of the marriage. The wedding isn't the target, what comes afterwards is. It comes down to this, don't sweat the small stuff, it's all small stuff.

Suggestions:

Baby Got Back

kidding

True Companion - Mark Cohen, one part of that you might not feel comfy with. Also, it's a little slow.

Compromise - Way You Look Tonight - Sinatra. It's got the angle Randy wants and it's got heart flutter to it.

A somewhat silly one with meaning would be "Our House," CSNY

Wouldn't It Be Nice - Beach Boys

Our song was by Climax and I don't remember the name but the main line was, "And I will love you always" and it talks about, "Come with me my Sweet, let's make a family". I mist up every time I hear it to this day.

I'd stay away from Prodigy's Smack My Bltch Up too. LOL!

In the end bit's advice is the best yet. The husband's job is to stay out of the way and do what his bride to be needs him to do to help get things done. Wedding planning is no-man's-land. Nod your head and say, "Uh huh." a lot. :)

THIS one...
Wedding Song (There Is Love)

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits, here, has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love, there is Love.

A man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home
And they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning is now and til the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
And there is Love, there is Love.

Well then what's to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life?
And if loving is the answer, then who's the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you've never seen before?
Oh there is Love, there is Love.

Oh the marriage of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love, there is Love.

Longer Than by Dan Fogelberg

I Only Have Eyes for You, most recently by Art Garfunkel (which ages it), but it was first done by a 50s group like The Platters or something

First, some unsolicited marital advice to you, OPIE, and to the future Mrs. Opie - Compromise is a word meaning no one gets what they want. My wife and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary on June 6th. Bite the bullet, OPIE. Weddings are for the bride and anyone that thinks differently is deluding themselves. Honeymoons are for the men... so, let her have her way now and then have your way on the Honeymoon. I promise, both of you will be much happier that way.

FWIW here's the first dance song I would use if I were to be married today:
I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad
Carry you around when your arthritis is bad
All I wanna do is grow old with you

I’ll get your medicine when your tummy aches
Build you a fire if the furnace breaks
Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you

I’ll miss you
I’ll kiss you
Give you my coat when you are cold

I’ll need you
I’ll feed you
Even let ya hold the remote control

So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink
Put you to bed if you’ve had too much to drink
I could be the man who grows old with you
I wanna grow old with you

It's by Adam Sandler from the Wedding Singer soundtrack. It's not too long, so you know, you're stared at for a short time only! Humor is really important in a marriage. Good luck to you both.
