Permithrin on undies???!?View Messages“I can't remember where it was -- some forum -- but I read people talking about spraying permithrin (such as Permanone by Repel) on undies. LOL! Somehow that just doesn't seem right. (And it surely doesn't say to do that on my can of Permanone!!) But -- is it bad? It would be on the outside of the undies, I presume. hahahahahaa...” 9:22:05 AM 6/22/05 “I have read two conflicting views on Permithrin. One states it is harmless and breaks down to Amino Acids on the skin, much like body lotions. The other says it's a very dangerous neuotoxin and mutagenic. Do some research so you are well informed before using any products. (not from .com sites)” 9:52:11 AM 6/22/05 “Liz... I took you as the type that went comando. permanone: Spray on clothes and let dry before wearing - not to be sprayed on skin. I'm kinda thinking that permanone on undies will keep ticks off the crackers, but later one may find ticks in the form of toxic shock or the like.” 10:04:27 AM 6/22/05 “By the time bugs get to your undies, it's pretty much too late. In addition, pesticides are absorbed through the skin. More sensitive skin parts are much more suceptable to dermal absorption. The MSDS requires safety glasses when applying permethrin by airborne application. Ocular absorption is the highest rate for pesticide intake. I wouldn't use it on undies. I suggest you continue to use it on boots, socks, gaiters, and outer garmets only.” 10:09:41 AM 6/22/05 “Lizs --- If you have bugs in your privates . . ..I'd see your doctor.” 10:14:07 AM 6/22/05 “My first thought is to use permithrin on the edges of undies (waist band and leg bands... maybe the thick part of the pee opening of guys underpants). That would help prevent ticks from getting in there without exposing more sensitive skin to the permithrin and avoiding absorbing excess permithrin.” 10:24:43 AM 6/22/05 “i would use it anywhere, but NOT in my undies. Really now... mean...think about it... unless [okay, guys look away for a sec, it's women's stuff] maybe you use pantyliners or something? There is just no way I would get that stuff near THAT skin. It could shrivel up or something. Na, I rather not. But hey...I thougth I heard something the other day on the local news, something about new bug repelent that was pretty effective while they tested it. Tried to find that info, but couldn't. :(” 10:27:20 AM 6/22/05 “I had several phone calls after I wrote the post above and didn't see Chili's post until I posted. He makes sense to me, except that if you are wearing loose fitting shorts it would still be useful to have an extra barrier to keep ticks out of your pubic hair where they are much harder to find (especially the nymphs).” 10:28:31 AM 6/22/05 “pedxing, you are assuming lizs doesn't shave.” 10:32:00 AM 6/22/05 “This also reminds me: Years ago, I was working in a state psychiatric hospital on an admissions ward. The head nurse and doctor found a tick in the crotch of a newly admitted female patient during the physical. Everyone present was nervous, as the highly agitated patient had to be restrained while the doctor removed the tick (with tweezers) - he proudly beamed when he showed off a whole tick squirming in the grasp of the tweezers. The head nurse said, "Dr. M. you have new speciality to advertise: 'No muff too tough, no tick too slick"” 10:34:49 AM 6/22/05 “ahhhh, shrivelled-up privates w/bugs in them...good old TT in the morning!” 10:35:32 AM 6/22/05 “Chili, that's just the kind of expert observation I expect from you.” 10:36:05 AM 6/22/05 “Remember Permithrin doesn't repel mosquitoes, it kills them. I believe I will forgo putting anything that kills things anywhere near my #&%!$.” 10:37:38 AM 6/22/05 “Thanks Arky. I try to stay up to form.” 10:43:59 AM 6/22/05 “Oh HOI already posted about it: http://thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/38902,1.php suppose to be really good stuff but I don't think it works on ticks.” 10:47:58 AM 6/22/05 “LMAO!! Actually, I think I saw the post on the Great Girls Backpackers forum. And at the time I read it, I think my face scrunched up and was frozen in horror!! >8-O Just wondered if you all felt the same. I see you do! :-) Upon reading the post on that forum, I thought, "OMG, putting that stuff close to your privates??!??! (nice of y'all to wonder about my privates. LMFAO!)..." But my second thought was, well, if you put it on the OUTSIDE of clothes, which is what you're supposed to do anyway, what's the harm? So I was pondering it all. NOT THAT I'D PUT IT ON MY UNDIES!!!! LOL! Glad to get y'all thinking... and perverting... LOL!” 10:50:22 AM 6/22/05 “By the way, I have watched a tick die on the permithrin-sprayed clothing. It works on their nervous system, ya know... Also, I saw what happened to a fly who happened to wander into the "spray zone" when I was spraying the clothing. Not pretty. ;-)” 10:51:39 AM 6/22/05 “well picaridin claims to work on ticks in much the same way deet works on ticks but I still think permithrin is better for ticks than deet” 10:53:00 AM 6/22/05 “wow...I organize my gear room and come back to this on tt...LOL” 10:53:10 AM 6/22/05 “hmm, the local news stated it does not work on ticks...or maybe it was on black flies? Not sure anymore.” 11:03:28 AM 6/22/05 “Jealous you didn't start this topic, aren't ya, SC?? LOL!!! ;-P” 11:04:43 AM 6/22/05 “no, not really. I feel sorry for anyone who wears undies :) Not me, commando all the way- cept when I wear butt floss :)” 11:13:55 AM 6/22/05 “ewww....so when you hike...u take new pants/shorts with you for every day??? or what do you do SC??? I mean...isn't that icky?? Discuss please! heeheehee” 11:15:27 AM 6/22/05 “Butt floss gem, I wear butt floss on my hikes...but if the weather is hot, I will sometimes hike in the buff :)” 11:17:21 AM 6/22/05 “Hey, I think that's a whole NEW thread. Start it! lol” 11:18:34 AM 6/22/05 “its kind of disturbing that gem wants to know the details.... lol” 11:20:27 AM 6/22/05 “you started it SC.... talking 'bout hiking comando....all I thought was ewwwww.... gross...i wouldn't want to hike without undies.” 11:22:27 AM 6/22/05 “I'm commando right now :)” 11:24:33 AM 6/22/05 “see...now that I did NOT want to know! but anyway...I am sure some people like to hike without...but I prefer to wear undies. To each it's own I guess.” 11:26:31 AM 6/22/05 “im sure that kilt guy had no undies on :)” 11:35:43 AM 6/22/05 “anyone who doesn't wear undies is WEIRD.” 11:44:13 AM 6/22/05 “anyone who plays with monkeys everyday is weired :) :D hehehehe” 11:45:05 AM 6/22/05 “was that "weird"... or "wired?" lol” 11:49:48 AM 6/22/05 “it's not PLAYING, it's SERIOUS BUSINESS.” 11:53:39 AM 6/22/05 “milk that monkey ... milk that monkey ... I can just hear that song now” 12:16:02 PM 6/22/05 “Thanks for re-joining the thread Lizs . . .but you didn't answer the question. See Chili's second post. last edited: 6/22/05 1:47:01 PM” 1:46:15 PM 6/22/05 “ ”2:34:52 PM 6/22/05 “OMG... it sounds like a conversation from "girls night out!" When one of our friends just shut up and didn't like our topic!!!!!” 3:24:18 PM 6/22/05 “I think that stuff is the same ingredient in Advantix for mosquitos on dogs and the packaging says not to get it on your skin. Even dogs can have a bad reaction to it.” 3:46:50 PM 6/22/05 “No, no, no.....I think you're all missing the boat here. You definitely don't want any sort of chemicals near your "area." I suggest something natural. When we want to keep pests out of the garden (heh, heh, heh) we use natural enemies like ladybugs or praying mantis.....sometimes we use owl decoys to keep birds away. The mosquitos natural enemy is a bat---they consume thousands of them. I have to believe that a creative young woman with a razor, a mirror, and maybe a wildlife book from Rand McNally could whittle her "area" into the shape of a bat with no problem. Think of it as your own personal little crotch scarecrow. And who knows, if you get good enough, you could be the next Sy Sperling and advertise on TV proclaiming that you're not just the president, you're a member.” 4:45:32 PM 6/22/05 “Ya know......I'm pretty handy with a razor ladies. For a small fee... well I could.....oh never mind! ;-)” 4:47:59 PM 6/22/05 “I thought you wanted the grapefruit smearing job?” 4:52:32 PM 6/22/05 “ohhhhh, i want a praying mantis!! LOL @ yous guys” 4:52:47 PM 6/22/05 “My thinking is this, and this is something that works. Take a bath using skin so soft and you will be fine. And there will not be any harm if you were to spray the stuff on your underwear. But what you really want is for them to not bite you, for long periods of time.” 5:00:08 PM 6/22/05 “you can have the praying mantis. did you ever get pinched by a praying mantis? ouch!! you can have it!!” 5:13:48 PM 6/22/05 “So what would you like Gem? A bat, a lady bug? Huh?” 5:14:47 PM 6/22/05 “I think I rather go uhmm.... uhmm...can I think about this a little while longer? You guys are a buncho sick people...” 5:24:18 PM 6/22/05 “Skin So Soft is supposed to provide a barrier on your skin from the mosquito. How thick can this stuff be? Anyway, I heard it does not work well.” 5:28:04 PM 6/22/05 “ive always liked dragonflies :) lyra doesnt need anything like that though, she has monkeys to pick through her hair eatting ticks and fleas.” 5:28:15 PM 6/22/05 “I have found skin so soft to work, very well. For ticks, chiggers, and the mosquitoes. I also spray my dog down with the stuff before each trip into the brush. It works.” 5:35:00 PM 6/22/05
