hmm.. most of the shelters are on the at which runs along some higher elevation ridges... and the majority on waterfalls are at the lower campsites where there are no shelters. if youre willing to tent, try looking at hikes starting from cosby or deep creek. abrams falls is a great waterfall, though its just a 2 mile hike from cades cove, it may connect to other trails though. you should be able to find some info on smokies website.

yep. Dry Falls is really nice (right off of hwy 28), Bridal Veil Falls is cool also, you can drive right behind it. There are several others along the highway...

NC Waterfalls Web Site:

I did Deep Creek last weekend. YOu can get a shuttle to take you to the top and walk downhill all the way back to Deep Creek Ranger Station. The last time I did that, it cost about $80--or take two cars. The Deep Creek trail is relatively easy (going down hill) and not too awful bad going up. The last two miles gain about 1000'. The whole trail gains about 2500 feet in about 15 miles. And, you parallel the creek all the way - no need to carry water! You have to tent camp at designated sites only. A couple of them are "rationed" sites that you have to reserve by phone ahead of time. The campsite numbers are 53 thru 60.
