sunscreen/insect repellentView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 8 of 8 messages posted.
my search for the ideal sunscreen/repellent “im searching for a convenient, light weight bottle of sunscreen which doubles as an insect repellent. sunscreen would have to be sweatproof of course, at least 25 spf and enough deet to last at least 4 hours. i mean if i could knock out a couple of ounces then im a happy man. i've done some research on the net but all that pops up is that off! sunscreen/repellent yet it only has about 9% percent deet which would last, what? 2 hours. if you would be so kind and offer suggestions i would take them with open arms. thanks, brian” 7:46:07 PM 6/22/05 “can anyone help a noob out” 8:52:30 PM 6/22/05 “I don't know of any combo sunscreen/DEET solutions on the market. The mixing usually happens naturally during the course of a trip. I can at least say I've never had any problems (or reactions) when both have mixed on my skin. Try using at least 33% DEET solution. It seems to be the lowest concentration thats still effective. There are also some new repellants on the market this year - picaradin, permithrin, and lemon eucalyptus oil. All are supposed to be safer than DEET. I've tried the picaradin and it seems to work well. All are available through REI. Hope that helps.” 9:50:52 PM 6/22/05 “hmm, i'll have to look into those. thanks for the tip” 10:33:02 PM 6/22/05 “you're supposed to reapply sunscreen within 2 hours anyway, so that shouldn't matter that the DEET is only enough for 2 hours. so go ahead and 10% poison yourself! or you could use this, it looks cool... http://www.smartshield.com/sunscreen_sprays.asp” 9:42:34 AM 6/23/05 “100% Deet is the most effective for keeping insects away. Do not use any natural stuff. I have heard many complaints in their uselessness.” 11:29:47 AM 6/23/05 “i did a buttload of reading and there is actually a great alternate for deet. http://www.picaridin.com/ i know it doesnt really slove my problem BUT im going to go with a small one OZ bottle of picaridin and this half an OZ of sunscreen” 10:06:03 PM 6/23/05 “avon has a good one” 10:12:31 PM 6/23/05
