Sunday, 19 June 2005: Sonora Pass Splitboarding

Slept at Sonora Pass (9,600’) to acclimatize. With a 9 day backpack in 2 wks, I needed to work out and not ride the lift. Met up with Vets and DiveGirl from TGR forum. Divegirl skinned up on skis, I skinned up on the splitboard, and Vets slowshoed carrying his skis. DiveGirl and I were Sonora Pass virgins so Vets introduced us to this beautiful area. The weather was perfect, the snow was great, and the views were awesome! 3 Libras in the backcountry for a great day of skiing/riding!

Snow Nymph - I am always in a little awe of your exploits. You get out there and do everyhting. These last photos made me wonder how many people I work with who ski, would ever consider just driving to Sonora Pass and hike up the side of a hill (mountain?) to ski down. Probably none, since that would be too much work. Those were great pictures.

Yeah! Fun!

sandyann, I met a guy on the slopes that ski's all year long by going to a glacier by Leavitt Lake (I think). Right now he's at 128 months (=almost 11 years). I might try to hook up with that group in Oct and try it (if I can find a free weekend)

. . . back to packing

Good Luck on your upcoming trip. Two weeks is a long time out there. I spent 3 weeks ones time and when I came home I thought I would never catch up on the sleep.

Oh goodness Whoa Nellie deli...did they have the blueberry cheescake?
Did you happen to notice to see if the wild iris's were in bloom in that hugh meadow before Bridgeport heading south on the left side?

sandyann,
I get my best sleep on the trail! Or in my truck when I car camp! After a long trip I'm spoiled. For some reason I never get enough sleep at home (maybe stay off the computer????)

Anita, we didn't so the smiley face. It was there. Sonora Pk looked doable. If I only had an extra day out there! I didn't even look at the desserts, trying to get rid of the winter roll. Their desserts are so tempting, though! I saw purple flowers in the meadows, but didn't know they were Iris. I almost stopped, but since it was windy I didn't think the pics would come out. I should have tried anyway.

Mammoth Mountain is still good!
