Louisiana girl killed by shark in the Gulf of Mexico. It doesn't happen often but it's a real threat. I'm sure the media will make a circus of this. I feel for the poor family.

Wow. I used to live in FL, swam in
these waters for four years as a kid. Right by the 98 was the Eglin AFB beach. My parents lived in South Walton County for 15 later when my Dad retired.

Oh my! I just got back from Mexico Beach last night (maybe about 50 miles from where the attack was). Its funny, cause we were joking about sharks the whole week, and even named the sandbar we were swimming out to "Shark Island." In the back of my mind I was a little nervous going out that far. Not because these things happen that often, but because I watched "Open Water" last week and "Jaws" has seriously scarred me for life. Ouch.

I have a trip in a couple of weeks that's only about 5 miles to the east of that map. The attack got my attention for sure.

Great coast.
The beaches and the water in that part of Florida are truly beautiful. Truly the Redneck Riviera (well-named). I haven't been down there in about eight years, but we always have a good time hitting the parks there. Especially the spring-based parks farther inland.

It turns out the little girl lived about 10 miles from me. Some of the people I work with know the family, truely sad for them. Real live heroes tried to save the girl. She was pretty much gone before they reached shore though.

another one!
I just heard on the news that a high school boy from my city just got attacted today off the coast of Panama City. He was fishing in waist-deep water with his brother. They had to amputate his leg but at least he survived. They said the brother punched the shark in the face to get him to let go.
