Fireworks and backpacking
Any peeps gonna be out to Nordhouse over the 4th? I was out there last year and was able to see 8 different fireworks displays on the horizon. Have to hike to a vista but it's a nice way to check 'em out. Wanted to see if anyone else has tried this or if I'm just a genius.

If "happy accident" equals "genius" then perhaps.

I too have experienced this display and can attest. It's the best.

spend the 4th on MT tallac in CA above Tahoe and you'll see an awesome show! :)

We're all geniuses here, just ask.

I might be in that area this weekend to set up a camp with my son. He's young and doesn't like to put on a lot of miles so we'll probably just hike in and set up a camp for a night or two and do some short day hikes. Not sure exactly where or what days yet. I'll let you know for sure later this week and you can look for our site.

Nonconformist, there's a kid's hike there in July if you'd like to join some more parents with kids. It's alot less work because the kids kinda entertain eachother. think it's the 17th, it's on the trips page. It'd be great to meet you. We don't go too far as some of the kids have really short legs, then set up camp and do whatever (mostly short dayhikes and playing).

Nordhouse is perfect for that sort of trip noncon, the mileage is low, with a huge payoff. It's roughly a mile from the trailhead to the beach (Nurnberg Rd. trailhead)- not too bad at all. The going can be a little rough in places though because the trails are mostly beach sand. I would recommend trying to hike north or south on the beach a bit before setting up camp ... everytime I go there, I see people camping all over the place just at trails end, ignorant to all the "better" places that a bit more hiking will reveal ...

... also, if you want to see any firework shows, you will need to get some elevation with a clear view to the east.

Happy Trails.

Thanks Thag and Sassafrass! I was thinking that the Nurnberg Rd. trailhead would be our best bet.
I'm planning on making the WV car camping trip, Sass, so I don't think we'll make the Nordhouse trip which is the same weekend. If things change, I'm sure we'll run into ya!

Yep, that's right UPluver. So I'm losing it, what else is new? lol, too much stuff going on. The 17th is Family reunion in Grayling and TTers are not invited, not enough brandy slushes for all you lushes! Hey, I'm a poet....

....Speaking of which, does anyone know if there's a fire ban in the Manistee National Forest right now; or anywhere around there? Seems like it's been really dry out as of late.

... they never told me, but due to his lack of zest, I'd put him in the over the hill category.

We went RIDING. Jeez.
