Come one, come all... you know this place rocks so let's start planning for summer '06

My wife and I might be up for this trip; we've been thinking about Glacier for years. We would be traveling up from the southeast. We might only be up for one week, though, if there were a suitable loop involved.

Go, Robert! Jerry and I might be able to do this trip. We were in Glacier last year and loved it. It will depend on an every other summer reunion rotation that would put us in WA for summer '06, but may change due to someone's illness. I won't know for awhile, but I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I plan to be in Glacier NP this September and again sometime the summer of 2006.

I backpacked in Glacier for 5 days last July, and it was a trip of a lifetime! I fell in love with the park and want to go back.

Then join us, woodzie! Amazing - everyone I've talked to absolutely loved Glacier. I can't wait!

I'd like to join up, but who knows what next summer holds? I am in school right now but will be finished by next summer. If I can afford it before going back to work, I'll take a Glacier vacation :-)

I visited Glacier once and loved it. Didn't backpack.

Any problem with Grizzlies for backpackers? I heard of some incidents some years ago.

Thans for the great pics. Given the interest of putting in 60-70 miles at least, anyone who has done some thru-hiking in Glacier want to comment on routes. I haven't began reading yet until my trip in 2 weeks is done, but am interested in starting soon.

Thanks,
Rob

Madseason...

Glad to see someone else is ready to plan. I started planning my TRT hike last year and am doing it solo starting this weekend - my last person backed out last weekend - hmmm.

What maps did you order? I'll send away for some info as well. Again, give me 2 weeks to return from my Tahoe trip and I'll get back in touch here.

Happy trails...

So far I've just purchased the National Geographic Trails Illustrated map of Glacier/Waterton Lakes National Parks (map# 215), along with the Falcon guide, Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes NPs (by Molvar). I figure it's not too early to start thinking about it...

Have fun on the TRT!

I have a couple of books from Lonely Planet that maps out some of the supposedly best hiking in the US, and of course include hikes in Glacier ranging from 1 to 6 days. Some of these can be linked to form a longer hike, including on into Waterton Lakes Nat'l Park in Canada. I'm extremely interested in this trip and had planned to get there this year but it fell through. I'll be glad to provide whatever input I can.

I've started reading my guide and studying the map --- there are a lot of great options. I also spent a good chunk of time yesterday downloading various documents from the official Glacier NP site (backcountry regulations, permit application, shuttle info), which I can email to anyone interested, or else you can get it yourselves from here:

I am interested, but two weeks is too long. At best I could stay out a week. If you plan on doing a week trip, I will be in. It sounds like a great trip.

In an earlier post, I also indicated that my wife and I are likely to only have a week. There ought to be a reasonable way to arrange some sort of loop with an opt-out after a week, maybe to also pick up some others for the second week.

I have just penciled it on my 06 calender. Iwould take a week but would love two weeks but have to figure in travel time.

I am very interested in this trip. Never been to Glacier, but would absolutely love to go. I'm with several here and can only do one week. I'll also keep an eye on the trip and order a few maps and guides. Please keep me in the loop if you are starting a email info list. I'll keep checking this thread. The prospect of Glacier is VERY exciting!

Hey Madseason,

Throw me an email and let's talk about planning this. It seems like between us we already have a lot of info to get started. Note that I live between Atlanta and Birmingham. We could discuss it during a dayhike on the Pinhoti trail. Any input from everyone else would be appreciated.

Rob - If the trip ends up being 2 weeks, maybe there is way some of us can jump on or off?

Here is a great Route that we did a few years back. It’s one of the most beautiful and makes for a nice loop:

We started at Many Glacier and hiked into the Belly River Country: The itinerary was Elizabeth Lake to Cosley Lake to Mokowanis Lake to Stoney Indian Pass then the Highline Trail to Granite Park and back to Many Glacier.

We did a dayhike to Mount Siyeh. It was supposed to be a walk-up but we got cliffed out. It was a heck of a dayhike. We were in an open field about 100 yards from a full grown grizzly. It was one of my most awesome experiences ever.

I’d like to tentatively add my name to the list for this trip.

Experience is a good teacher. Check the date that Glacier accepts applications for permits and take it very seriously. You’ll need serious second and third choice campsites on your application. I have a friend who used to live right outside the park. I mailed him our request for permits. The first day that Glacier accepted permits, he dropped our request in the mailbox right outside the park. We STILL only got our second choice campsite at Elizabeth Lake.

Campsites fill QUICKLY. My friend no longer lives outside the park. I would Overnight Express my application on the FIRST day the Glacier accepts applications.

What kind of mileage is that Arclite?
Tango
7:33:18 AM

Figure about 7 miles/day, Tango.

The first day was longer because we had to stay at the second campsite at Elizabeth Lake. The campsite at the base of the lake would be ideal. The second day was something like a little over 5 miles.

I prefer 7-8 mile days. I like to stop, enjoy the scenery, and take pictures. I don't enjoy eco-challenges which is actually what the hike turned into. Did you read my trip report a couple of years back? One of the guys (wall-man) was from NYC. Typical Newyawkuh, the guy hikes at 4mph!!! He got all red and sweaty but just had to get to the next campsite as quickly as he could. And the temps were 85 during the day! I don't want to end up on a hike like that again.

You don't want to hike alone in Glacier if you can help it. We had to reroute our trip because there were so many Grizzlies roaming.

Hey guys...

sorry about the hiatus. I completed my Tahoe Rim Trail and have been recooperating from feet from hell.

I'm ready to start doing more research on this trip and will be following the thread closer.

One week sounds better to me as well.

Logan Pass to Goat Haunt via Granite Park, Fifty Mountain, and Kootenai Lake. Then Goat Haunt to Kintla Lake via Lake Francis, Hole-in-the-Wall, and Upper Kintla. Figure about 7 days/6 nights, and try to keep your group to 4 or less, so when you apply next spring (April 1), you actually stand a chance of getting your intended itenerary, being that these are very popular campgrounds.

We did this route this summer just a few weeks ago, except that we had to exit to Bowman Lake because we couldn't get Upper Kintla, and Hole-in-the-Wall was closed due to bears. Pictures to whet your appettite...

Also, if you bring your passports and some cash with you, $25 US will get you a boat ride at Goat Haunt up to Waterton in Canada and back for some cool mid-hike pizza and beer...

You gotta check out the Highline Trail - its without a doubt one of the classic trails in America.

Let me suggest this again:

It's a loop through the Belly River Country starting at the Many Galcier Lodge. According to the research I did back then, this is supposed to be some of the best scenery in the park. I'll vouch for that.

From Many Glacier to Elizabeth Lake to Cosley Lake to Mokowanis Lake to Stoney Indian Pass then travel the Highline Trail to Granite Park and back to Many Glacier.
