“My son and I went to see it at a late show. It was really good. Classic Spielberg work that had me on edge for most of the picture. Good acting, very nice script, excellent characterisations. The special effects were well done without being cheesy or overwhelming, even though there are some strong scenes in which the fx do tend to be almost blinding in their intensity. Basically, the fx are well meshed with the human aspects of the film.

As with the novel, with Wells painting a cautionary symbolic tale of turning the tables on Britain's destruction of and terrorism toward cultures less technologically advanced, this one is obviously a poke at America using its umatched military wares to kill the people of less developed nations as we please.”

“I saw it this past weekend and it kicks booty!!!! I hate Tom Cruise but the movie still won me over. I thought the little girl and the Tim Robbins character were great. The FX are spectacular. I was actually scared at moments...which has not happened for me in a long time. The story is just amazing. No wonder people went into such a panic years ago when it was broadcast on the radio.

I think the thing that makes it scary is that it's not something that can not be ruled out of an actual possiblity. Probably not likely...but still...we don't know.

Few questions about the movie:

if the aliens planted their machines here millions of years ago, would they have not also become exposed to earth bacteria and parasites?

did they machines become sick (why would the force field be down? did little ceratops alien forget to press the foorce field button?)

were the machines bio-machines?”

yes, but not nearly as much. we humans spread bacteria and parasites by our existence, moreso in our densely populated areas. but that does raise another question. historically (on earth, anyway) it has always been the invaders bringing disease which kills off the natives. so why didnt we die of alien diseases? perhaps, after the movie ended, we did. but this is a popcorn-flick, not history.

“i generally hated the pota remake, but i kinda dug the ending. i guess they wanted to keep the surprise element and not have the same ending. pota is probably the only tim burton movie i dont like, and i think the problem had more to do with the script than with burtons directing”

“I ditched it. We went to Red Lobster then I dropped a friend at the theatre and went home. It was 9:45 and I had done 3 separate workouts yesterday so I was beat, especially after all that seafood. Plus my wife is going away for the weekend so I wanted to see her.

I thought the ending was a trick.

I just remember seeing a commercial for the new ABC alien invasion show, the one where the little girl says "Mommy, you smell different."

So, when Tom Cruise was hugging his son at the end, all I could think was "Kill him." That would have made a great ending:)”

“I wonder how many people realize that Spielberg created the whole thing as a rejection of the current war on terror.

His position is that the values of freedom, left to work, will defeat terrorism more effectively than tanks and bombs. Hence, the defeat of the alien invaders simply by surviving long enough to outlast them. Trust the innate protection.

That is obviously a debateable point, but I do think that he captured the likely end of the war on terrorism much more effectively than anyone else in this movie. It is not likely to be a big, bombastic victory, but a strangely ambivalent quiet.”
