Another Timewaster...
Ever wonder what your neighborhood looks like from outer space? Well, for those of you with broadband Internet connections and faster computers, now you can find out:

Google Earth

(They say you need a decent computer and Internet connection to run this thing; I have a Windows 2000, 1.8 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM Laptop on a WiFi/Cable Internet connection and it works just fine...)

PS, They say it isn't available yet as it is in beta form right now. Let us know when it's available to the general public.

It's pretty neat. But, not too up-to-date. I found my house and it's got my old roof color which was replaced over 2 years ago.

Wow, just started playing with this. Very fun!

For TT'ers - here is a link to a file that will locate all the shelters on the AT. Each point has info about water sources and shelter size. So cool! Much thanks to RockyRaccoon for doing it all!

Just click on "Open this Placemark" right under the thread title "The Entire Appalachian Trail!!"

Why am I always the last person to know about these things?

Apparently terrorists have been making good use of it to case their targets.

How often do they update the map? My house is two years old and there is nothing there.

I think it has to be declassified through the military? But you're right. The photos currently on there are at least two years old.

When you zoom in a date when the satellite images were taken will appear under the scale bar.

The satellite view for my place shows my old truck, and I've had the "new" one for 7 years. Of course I do live close to one of the Arsenal gates.

Different places have different dates....DUH...I've run into some extremely recent ones for instance of the Missile Field at Fort Greely Alaska (home to National Missile Defense....take a look at how detailed the launch facilities are just to the south of the Main Post...)

Man, I need to look closer next time. Our house is there, but not much else. No grass yet, and the concrete truck is in front, pouring our neighbor's driveway. The lack of caffeine this morning is showing.

Weather.com's images are about 2 years old.
