ATTN Mapleleaf ASAPView Messages“How do you feed a baby bluejay?” 1:29:12 PM 7/04/05 2:32:34 PM 7/04/05 “weve been feeding it canned kitty food, baby food and berries mixed together and he seems to be liking that.” 2:56:25 PM 7/04/05 “bump” 11:55:18 AM 7/05/05 “I have fed baby robins canned dog food. It worked well.” 1:33:27 PM 7/05/05 “the baby is taking really well to the food we are giving him. We adopted two cockitiels today because some woman who had them was in a coma and not expected to get through...so in a total of 5 days we freaking gained 7 freakin birds! The grand total= 17..... last edited: 7/05/05 6:37:16 PM” 6:36:44 PM 7/05/05 “Well to total it all up we have 55 pets.” 6:55:24 PM 7/05/05 “Mapleleaf - A mother duck had 5 ducklings hatch today at the nest under our mailbox. 4 eggs still remain. 4 ducks are fine, but one appears injured. He moves in circles. Might have hurt himself in the fall off the curb. I found this online: TEMPORARY CARE: Any sick, injured, or newly hatched ducklings needs to go on a heating pad on the low setting. Do NOT put them in water. Use an empty aquarium, cardboard box, or other appropriate container, line it with paper towels or an old towel, and put a cover on it. Ducklings can jump up to 2 ft. out of a box. Put water in a small, shallow container such as the lid of a peanut butter jar. Grind dry dog or cat food up and sprinkle in the water. The duckling should peck at the food. Baby cereal will also work. This is for temporary care only. Ducklings need Turkey or Game Bird Starter as a proper food (from a feed store). Do NOT feed a duckling bread or regular cereal (corn flakes, Cheerios, oatmeal) as it does not provide any nutrition for the duckling's health. I don't know of any conservatories in the Harrisburg area. Does it have a chance? What would you do? Thanks!” 9:12:43 PM 7/06/05 “quick, call the FBI and the Secret Service!” 10:11:55 PM 7/06/05 “aw sarge :) what a sweatheart rescuing little ducks” 6:32:31 AM 7/07/05 “The Humane Society in my area isn't open until noon, so he's in my car w/ food and water and shelter until then. He may be beyond saving, but he's got spirit. His name is Kissyduck. I was going to leave him w/ a phone #, but they have a sign saying that it's illegal to abondon them. last edited: 7/07/05 7:03:56 AM” 7:03:20 AM 7/07/05 “In your car? its not hot out there IS it?” 7:04:20 AM 7/07/05 “They need warmth. No other choice.” 7:06:19 AM 7/07/05 “if you put it in a hot car, you could kill it, just as if you left a baby out in the car. you could put it in a box with a blanket over it to keep in warmth...” 7:08:54 AM 7/07/05 “have you tried to find a local wildlife rehab? call the zoo, all vet offies you will find one. they will be able to walk you throu all that needs to be done.you will have to drive it to them, they are not allowed to pick them up (well that is the law in NY ) he needs to be checked out. if you can find a vet that handles wild life that is even better. some vets will take on the situation for free. go inwith a kid and if you dont have any. find one! i am being serious. ps, you have him in the car? please take him out and put him back with his family, nature has a funny way of taking care of its self. the truth is, he may make it or he may not. but you are a good person for caring! hope this helped a little” 7:10:42 AM 7/07/05 7:11:46 AM 7/07/05 “please take him out and put him back with his family, nature has a funny way of taking care of its self. I watched as his mother abondoned him and left him for dead. Thanks for the advice. (rereading that, it sounds like I'm being sarcastic b/c of the "take it back to mother" advice - I'm serious, thanks for the advice.) last edited: 7/07/05 7:16:08 AM” 7:12:51 AM 7/07/05 “glad you edited it, :) im sorry you have to deal with it, it does suck. but please try the website and the phone calls” 7:17:17 AM 7/07/05 “the blue jay baby is doing fine. The cockatiels have decided to tend to the little guy lol...though I still feed it with a syringe. He has good appitite wanting to be fed every hour or two.” 7:23:23 AM 7/07/05 “good for you, didnt know you also had a blue jay. had did you get him? you need to have as much of no human contact with his as possible. you should be feeding him with a puppet of a adult blue jay. you can not allow him to think you are his mother, that is the worse thing you can do. he will becoame to dependent on yo, then not want to leave. putting him with the other birds a good, just keep an eye on how they treat him, if at any time they start to peck at him, remove him ASAP you know that saying, bird brain? well its true. birds are kinda dumb that way, they do not remeber if they have 1, 2, or 10 eggs or chicks.” 7:37:14 AM 7/07/05 “mapes someone learned we had birds so they left him in a box on our step for us to find. I suspect its one of the neighbors... anyway how do you go about getting a jay puppet???I have just been hand feeding him like baby parrots... last edited: 7/07/05 7:44:51 AM” 7:39:17 AM 7/07/05 “you need to make one. you might want to contact a local rehaber who has delt with wildlife. if the law finds out you have the blue jay and you have no licence you might get introuble.” 8:08:15 AM 7/07/05 “mapes how do I get a licence?” 9:19:02 AM 7/07/05 “study and pass the test. NY state only gives the test once a year, you need to contact your local DEP for further info.” 9:19:54 AM 7/07/05 “I'm guessing that Indiana and New York state law is different on this.” 9:20:09 AM 7/07/05 “owning and caring for wildlife is very very different then taking care of a domestic animal. i can not even take care of a wild bird (not pigons because they are considered rats LOL) but I need a different licence for taking care of birds of prey.” 9:22:19 AM 7/07/05 “We eat birds in Indiana” 9:23:21 AM 7/07/05 “yes we already know you eat your own meat!” 9:25:24 AM 7/07/05 “You can have some of my meat in a little more than a week!” 9:36:23 AM 7/07/05 “mapes I called around..the only wildlife person willing to take birds is all the way down in bloomington..there is one in crown point but he wont take birds- only coons, possums and squirrls... Im NOT driving 5.5 hours down south for a bird. I made a sock puppet out of a blue sock...I hope that works.” 10:13:06 AM 7/07/05 “get a pic of an adult Blue Jay and pin it to the face. you do not want to imprint the baby bird” 10:15:23 AM 7/07/05 “thanks mapes, I will try that :) imprint it? heck I think IM getting imprinted. hes such a cute fluffball.” 10:22:04 AM 7/07/05 “You going to cook that up for the cook off Nic?” 10:40:55 AM 7/07/05 “im thinking jerky WK” 10:44:04 AM 7/07/05 “Ok. I took Kissyduck to the Humane Society and they had me take it to an animal hospital in another town. He's in their hands now. I just hope they don't destroy Kissyduck. He wasn't moving too well, but maybe they can save him.” 1:17:57 PM 7/07/05 “you did the right thing sarge :) maybe there is some bleeding heart in you somewhere after all :)” 1:24:43 PM 7/07/05 “Thanks sc. The internet has a way of creating false perceptions in people of others at times. I limit most of my talk to things that greatly interest me on here. There is more to Sarge than wanting to defend America's base values from self-proclaimed progressive nut-cases. last edited: 7/07/05 1:33:41 PM” 1:32:20 PM 7/07/05 “"The internet has a way of creating false perceptions in people of others at times" "There is more to Sarge than wanting to defend America's base values from self-proclaimed progressive nut-cases. last edited: 7/07/05 1:33:41 PM” Read the first quote...then the second... you don't think there is more to the other people on this board? Thats quite a statment there sarge :) I agree with the first statment...” 1:45:21 PM 7/07/05 “If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it. I was only referring to people who the shoe fit. Man, you sure are defensive today. That's two in a row!” 1:57:26 PM 7/07/05 “sarge you did the right thing. if kissyduck( ok the thought of a grown man naming a bird that rocks my socks) was having to tough of a time just doing the normal things in life then you did what was needed. kissyduck would have fallen to prey and could have died a pretty bad way. being so young and weak would have made it even harder for the mother to tend to the healthy ones and she would have just moved the others and left her for dead. but then again i think you said she already did that right? it was her way of making sure that her family will continue to grow strong and thrive and not have to be bogged down to the sickly bird. only the strong will survie if they put her down, it was just like going to sleep. sweet dreams little kissyduck” 7:05:35 AM 7/08/05 “There is more to Sarge than wanting to defend America's kissyfducks from self-proclaimed progressive nut-cases. last edited: 7/07/05 1:33:41 PM” I like the way that one sounds better :)” 7:07:01 AM 7/08/05 “lol Mapleleaf! We got to see a baby owl last night. Turns out owls nest right across the street from us! One of the babies left the nest and was injured. Poor thing got itself to an area that was kinda like a little fortress for it but the flies were all over it. Birch spent a good hour trying to find a wildlife rehaber. He managed! Hoping the little fuzzball makes it. I was amazed to find owls in our neighborhood. I guess it makes sense though, there's chipmunks, squirels and rabbits, water and huge trees.” 7:15:48 AM 7/08/05 “I'm supposed to get a new computer next week. Old one was ravaged by Violin's website. If so, I'll post pics of Kissyduck.” 7:18:11 AM 7/08/05 “that is so cool sass, what a find. all i have are morning doves, now dont get me wrong...im all about nature but NOT AT 5:30 AM NO NEED TO TWEET OR CHIRP OR TELL YOUR LOVE BUG HOW YOU ADORE HER! LOL its not so bad now that spring has sprug, now its fun to see all the babies growing up. i have pics im going to upload of two of the littles guys sitting on our front porch (yea cute till you have to clean the poop up) Birch is a great guy, first sarge then birch...mother nature brings out the best of guys right!” 7:27:40 AM 7/08/05 “tweet tweet” 7:32:00 AM 7/08/05 they are so used to us they don't fly away anymore “ ![]() ![]() ![]() ”7:45:38 AM 7/08/05 “Plus, they know that, from us, they can get three squares a day and a nice railing to roost on with a view of the park!” 8:19:54 AM 7/08/05 “"Birch is a great guy, first sarge then birch...mother nature brings out the best of guys right!" - mapleleaf "Plus, they know that, from us, they can get three squares a day and a nice railing to roost on with a view of the park!" - Treebeard Tree - Are you talking about the birds or the women?” 8:23:10 AM 7/08/05 “LMAO mapes, 5 in the am our house sounds like a freakin jungle LMAO between the love birds, the cockitiels, the budgies, the doves and the dog...oy! Theres one freakin budgie that never shuts up LOL, even when his head is tucked and is asleep he's still singing away. :D last edited: 7/08/05 9:08:57 AM” 9:07:21 AM 7/08/05 “The women, of course!
