You had better "batten down the hatches" if you are going to ride out this one.

karo - I don't ride out any hurricane. My a$$ will be NorthWest of it. A house and belongings I can replace.

well it looks as if they may ask us to evacuate the beaches tomorrow morning. we will find out more later today. they are expecting wind to be 60 to 80 mph with 3-4 ft storm surge. alot will depend on how close it comes to the pinellas county beaches. my hurricane box is ready to pull out of the closet and will head inland to our daughters house.

Divinity, that's a pretty shot of the storm. I have no worries from this torm other than the usual sinus pain' headache associated with these darn big low pressure systems. Ugh. Everyone out there in that thing's path; be safe!

divinity - Yes, that is a good picture of the storm. One can see on it why I left Ocala NF earlier and returned home a day early.
A month ago, a day before my return to Melbourne from GSMNP, there was a strong storm here. 16-17 more places were damaged severely, including a neighbor, who lost a roof.

And they are still tearing out places from last year's hurricanes!

The rain just stopped here for a break. Tonight the feeder bands have been dropping a lot of water along the coastal areas here and on up into Ocala NF, where we were camped. Glad we came home.

Suddenly it is real quiet outside. This is just like being inside the eye of a hurricane, but we're nowhere close. Good luck to you folks in and near the direct path. Oops, here comes some more rain. And, wham, it is really dropping now.

Looks like we are in the projected Northeast quadrant of the storm. This place isn't even close to recovering from Ivan. Someone forgot to pay the preacher. It's gonna be a bad shift at the fire dept today!

we have had high surf today, 5-6 foot waves. not too much rain, but alot of wind. we all went for a walk on the beach and we have lost about 3-4 feet off the sand dunes. this not a bad thing, they were getting to big. as for our sea turtle nest, it's probably gone. the state won't let the agency that monitors them, move them. also if the eggs are rotated it will kill the baby turtles. i'm hoping the beach will dry out soon.

treebait - Did your neighborhood receive any flooding or high wind damage?

Apalachicola was receiving some winds of 60-mph and a high storm surge of 10 feet, I believe. This could result in closing some of the Park again.

Friday, Sandestin had a mandatory evac by 5pm. I left at 5:15 and by 7:30 made it the 9 miles to where US331 turns north. I kept on 98 to Panama City Beach where I stopped for supper. We took FL79 north and had no traffic. Once I cleared 331 it was smooth sailing. We got home at 2am and have been catching up on sleep ever since. I'd been looking forward to that beach getaway. I'd worked about 25 consecutive days and now Dennis shows up. Thanks buddy.

I can whine and moan, but those folks in Navarre are getting blasted. I hope everyone stays safe. So far the Alabama coast is looking good.

The clouds looked like they would stack up and pour all weekend but all we got was a few light rains and some breezyness.

A whole lotta nothing up here.

However the humidity was so thick that you could see the water vapor suspended in the air like fog. Wave your hand and it comes away wet.

I've been wondering about him too. He's probably been working his tail off. The only injury report I've heard is that a tree fell on a car in Montgomery and the person driving got bruised up.

How did your place fare SS?

Sipsey flow is off the chart:

I have an email in to Bama to see how things went his way. It almost went over the top of Sipsey.

Dennis report from North Alabama:

I'm at 1600ft on the bluff of a mountain near Huntsville, AL. We had high winds here on Sunday from approx. 4pm through early morning on Monday. The usual branches and leafs covered the yard, along with a few shingles from the garage. The pool was full of leafs but that's normal for a storm.

Last year I had the roof replaced on the house because of Ivan. I paid extra for heavy wind resistant shingles...that worked just fine. I couldn't even tell that one of them had moved during the high winds. I guess I need to replace the shingles on the garage with the same kind...cha ching.

I guess it could have been worse...phew!

Who wants to bet that in at least 8 days that storm will threaten some poor coast in the Gulf? I'd only double the odds against it hitting Lower Alabama (includes Florida panhandle to about Panama City) again.

Just damn...

There's a reason trips to Florida or the carribean are cheap in the summer. It's not just that it's hot where you are too, but it's hurricane season. It's hit or miss of you trip turns out good or bad, but who wants to go to a hot spot when it's hot in your area?

When I owned a motel in Cocoa, FL, it was full from around February 1st until June 1st. The rest of the year was a different story. December and January were great months for the local residents without too many tourists around.

My sis-in-law is in Ft Lauderdale and the Quebecquers (sp?) come down in droves in the winter. There are many french speakers in the area esp for them. It amazed me how many Canada plates there were the January we visited; they were everywhere!

I just learned that my sister and her family are taking a vacation to some place just south of Cancun. Before I read on I thought Hurricane. Her next line was, "I hope we don't have a hurricane. And yes,she said they did get a good package deal. *shaking head*
