Random Acts of Vandalism

Three hours after arriving at Myrtle Beach on Sunday we went to the Grand Coastal Mall to catch a movie. A couple hours later I came out and found my car vandalized.

The vandals beat my windshield, hood, passenger door and passenger front right quarter panel with a golf club.

Being July 4th weekend I had to drive the car around for 2 days with a busted windshield.

There are about 4 big dents in the hood. With the car being black they are hard to take pictures of but one of them is in the lower right hand side of the picture below.

My insurance agent (Progressive) did a great job about finding me a company on July 5th to come out and replace the windshield. I'll still have to leave the car in the shop when I get back to Columbus so they can fix the dents and repaint the bad sections. Overall it was almost $2000 of damage, probably done in less than 30 seconds in broad daylight at a crowded mall. The car was parked near the front, no witnesses or at least no one who cared to go turn them in. The new $1 billion dollar mall has no security cameras so they culprits will most likely not be caught and will continue to randomly vandalize cars. Sucks!

Sorry to hear about it. I had my vehicle vandalized at a trailhead years ago so I know how you feel. It sucks that some people have nothing better to do, but do stupid things like vandalism.

Offtopic - In your pics, where somebody is jumping in the water, is there a waterfall to the left and a hill going up to the right of that picture?

Tough break, Dub. Good luck with the repairs.

Sue the mall. They should have security as the mall constitutes an attactive hazard. I've had trouble at Walmarts in the GSMNP area.

My car has a security alarm system, but a few months ago someone tried to enter through the rear window. They had pried out some of the molding around the window.

I can understand if someone is a thief and busts in a side window to steal something, but there was absolutely nothing in the car to steal. So they just beat the car to a pulp.

Sarge, send me a link to the pic you are talking about...I've got too many pics on my webpage to know which one you're talking about.

It looks similar to a place we skinny-dipped (see skinny dipping thread), but I don't recognize that concrete wall behind you guys, so I don't think it is. But man, it looks very similar.

Actually there is a small cascade to the right of the that picture and there is a road going up a hill straight up from the bridge on the left of the picture. It's from Bemis, WV.

I like to call that picture, "Busted TA"

Sorry to hear about your car.

A number of years ago some kid, that the cops caught, broke the window in our car as a part of gang initiation. Just broke the window and didn't take anything. I know how I felt then, can't imagine what you're going through.

Followed...
..not all vandalisim is random...a perceived slight on the road, (The bastage cut me off man!...) and the wounded follow you to where you park the car, then hit to teach you a lesson...

After any such event pay close attention to your surroundings; spending a few moments to ensure you are not followed can prevent many such things...

There is a wounded soul here in Alabama who tried it, and now is truely wounded....and scarred no doubt...vehicles are not the only things that can be "Vandalized"....

Several years ago in a case of mistaken identity my truck was vandalized in my driveway. Somebody spray painted "stay away from my wife", "leave her alone or I kill you". AND NO I WAS NOT FOOLING AROUND WITH ANYBODY! The police took a report and my insurance agent wanted pictures, so my wife took the truck in and the office staff (all female) had great sympathy for my wife and told her that they hope I would get what I deserved. Two weeks later I saw a truck that looked very similar to mine and spoke with the "gentleman" and told him of my troubles. He apologized and told me they broken it off and if I was out any money he would make it up to me. However having a good wax job on the truck the paint came off with a hose, and the insurance check went for a great night out for my wife and I.

That blows Dub!

I had a 79 two tone green Pontiac Grand Prix in High School that was the easiest car in the world to break into. I went out to drive to school one morning and saw that the doors were unlocked and I remembered locking the night before. I figured someone got in and bogarted my stereo. To my surprise, the thing was hanging by a single wire. I figured they got spooked and ran off.

The problem was, I know they would be back and there was nothing I could do. I left a note on the steering wheel everynight that said, "Keys in the ignation, please take the whole car." 2 weeks after the initial break in, it happened again, except this time it was far worse. The douchebags cut all 4 tires, took a dump in the back seat, pissed all over the front seats, broke out the dashboard, and of course took the stereo. They even wrote me a note. "Stereo is worth more than the car sucka!"

Wow WK, I think your story sucks way worse than mine. Prosecutor once told me that criminals get caught because criminals repeat their acts of theft, vandalism, and crime. The people who get away with such crimes only do it once or not very often. But criminals who do this type of thing all of the time eventually get caught. I hope the judge that sees their trial has had his or her vehicle busted and gives it to them hard.

Some damn hoodlums came round the other night and keyed the J Peterman!

When somebody smashed my driver's side window to steal a radio and tools while I was hiking, making it necessary to drive 80 miles home on a 30-degree night with no window, I fought not to load the car up with electronics, park at the trailhead, and sit up the hill with my .303 Enfield waiting for the $hit to step out of his truck with a ball bat. I was gonna wait till he got the bat up and let fly a round right next to his ear and watch him crap his drawers. I worked that scenario over in my mind for weeks before letting go. It was good therapy for me.

My wife just emailed me. Her brand-new classroom was broken into last night and trashed. Her school just opened in August and has already had 2 other break-ins. This time they hit her stuff. Stole a monitor, destroyed computers, broke all her music CDs, threw toys all over the place (its a pre-k room). They have video cameras and an alarm system, don't ask me why those 2 systems haven't been very effective. She was so happy to have all new stuff, now this... damn brats.

The schools do not want to catch them. They might be forced to punish them, and then they have to deal with the parents screaming.

Further details. The video cameras didn't catch them - for some dumb reason they don't have cameras on every exit. The crime lab did get fingerprints, so maybe they'll get lucky and get a match. The school isn't going to pay to replace the CDs that were stolen/broken. :-(

That just sucks.

If and when those responsible get caught....there should be a public whipping!!!! The school should post a reward...first perp to talk (and give up the names of ALL involved) gets $500.00....they'll be turning on each other real fast.

All our districts got $150,000 play structures a few years ago. Instead of woodchips the district put ground up tres under them. It was awesome. The kids loved to bounce through the rubber bits, they didn't get hurt when they fell, etc, etc. Then the local teenagers figured out they could set the rubber bits on fire. They burnt all the plastic coating and plastic slides off the playstructure, ruining it.

The cops found out who did it. The district sued their parents to reimburse the school for the structure. All the rubber bits had to come out from under all the otherplay structures. I don't think the parents ever paid. The school system should've just settled for sending their kids to juvie instead. Or maybe sent them to juvie until the parents paid for the equipment.

Stupid kids.

mapleleaf - your offer is appreciated, thank you. I received another offer to buy new CDs from another member of this board (I will leave them anonymous since they contacted me privately). As I told that person, during lunch yesterday my wife inventoried the damaged discs and it turns out only one of her personal CDs was destroyed. The rest were part of the official curriculum so the school has already reordered them. We can handle replacing one CD, LOL!

Thank you very much for the offer, though. That goes for the anonymous offer, too, if you check back on this thread.

The toys were cleaned up, the keyboards that had water on them were dried out and work again. The missing monitor will take time to replace (different spending fund than the CDs). All in all its back to normal.

They figure the kids snuck in through the unlocked after-school daycare entrance before 6 when that program closes and locks those doors. The entrance goes directly into where the care providers and kids would be, but that evening they were in the cafeteria having a party so the doors were unattended. The night janitor saw a broken CD in my wife's room and swept it up some time just after 6 - but somehow didn't see the other piles of mess the kids left behind (?!?!). Go figure, we can't. So it wasn't discovered until my wife came in the next morning.

From now on the teachers will all lock their interior doors when they leave. They were leaving them unlocked until the evening staff cleaned each room and then locked them, but obviously that doesn't do any good.

Bigots!!!!!!!
My grandmother was of German decent and was very proud of her Vandal heritage. One her behalf and on behalf of all German Americans, and of the Vandal-American anti-defamation league, I must denounce the use of the term vandalism as an affront to and an assault on human dignity.

You ever go to Wikipedia and see a page "Locked" due to recent vandalism but the vandalism is gone? Check this out on the Secret Service Page:

Recent Allegations of Widespread Protective-Function Agents' Criminal & Professional Misconduct
Many of the people who have become targets of the Secret Service and even its own current and former employees have described horror stories of Secret Service agent criminal misconduct and professional misconduct, cowardice, arrogance, a total lack of any sort of accountability or meaningful oversight, and a basic lack of respect for anyone or anything being prevalent within the agency as a whole (See: "Secrets of the Service", U.S. News & World Report, June 1, 2002). The Secret Service is described by agents who currently work for it or used to work for it as unable to provide protective services any longer and as an agency which is about to collapse under the weight of its own corruption and incompetence.
