“The movie is coming out around Christmas. I never read the Narnia books. My son will be 6 in Feb. Are the books appropriate for someone so young? I'm considering getting the book and reading it to him in prep for the movie. Any thoughts?” 5:45:34 PM 7/18/05 “well, the original cartoon was kid-appropriate” 5:47:26 PM 7/18/05 “I think they are appropriate. The author had strong Christian beliefs from what I understand. I read the whole series and enjoyed every book.” 6:01:53 PM 7/18/05 6:04:50 PM 7/18/05 “They showed the trailer before Star Wars this past Friday. That's what generated all of this. So the magic and all wouldn't be likely to scare little kids?” 6:10:39 PM 7/18/05 “While you are reading it? No, but a lot of that would be in the way you read it. I'm not sure how the magic is represented in the movie but I know when I was younger I loved all the characters.. and the Lion is awesome. Have you read Harry Potter to them? last edited: 7/18/05 6:39:29 PM” 6:39:01 PM 7/18/05 “I think I'll give it a try. Dunadan and I talked about this about a year ago and I felt like my son wasn't ready. I think Dunadan said he read it to his around 6 or 7 or so. Thx.” 6:40:17 PM 7/18/05 “The Narnia Chronicles are awesome, and totally appropriate for all ages. Although some of the underlying plot lines may be a bit beyond a child's grasp, but it's still great. My son is reading the entire saga right now...he's 9 if that helps.” 6:54:33 PM 7/18/05 “I read the book to my son when he was 3. He didn't get all of it, but he enjoyed it. Not too scary at all.” 7:02:29 PM 7/18/05 “The books are HPM's favorite series. When he saw the promo for the movie, he was totally pi$$ed at how much they changed the story.” 7:21:05 PM 7/18/05 “I seem to remember reading the book in elementary school-- maybe when I was about 9 or 10? It's been many years since I read the books, but never found them to be scary (and I'm a big chicken when it comes to scary stories or movies.)” 7:34:43 PM 7/18/05 “DH, I have the series on standby till my daughter is a touch older. I would take my daughter if she were 6, what a super series of books.” 8:31:31 PM 7/18/05 “i had finished the narnia cronicles multiple times by the third grade....then moved straight into Tolkien. If he's smart and imaginative....i'd say yes....let his fantasies grow.” 11:10:58 PM 7/18/05 “CS Lewis is definitely a Christian author...has some interesting books to his credit aside from the Chronicles of Narnia. CS Lewis and JRR Tolkein were actually friends. Tolkein was not really interested in religion, and Lewis wanted to introduce him to Christianity. The Chronicles were Lewis' attempt at explaining Christianity to Tolkein at his level. I've not read them, but have had them on my long list for awhile. Other books always seem to make their way up the list faster, though.” 11:36:35 PM 7/18/05 “I have two complete sets of LWW. I hope that my boys love it as much as I do. And I like Lewis's style of writing in his non-fiction as well. He has a very logic-based approach.” 12:23:24 AM 7/19/05 “the way i understood it, tolkien was always a christian, it was lewis who converted from atheism to christianity” 1:07:46 AM 7/19/05 “as a matter of fact, lotr was written with christian themes in mind, the most obvious being gandalfs sacrifice and resurrection” 1:10:39 AM 7/19/05 “I think this is a go. My wife has her ladies beach trip this weekend and I'm keeping the kids. We're driving to visit my folks and I see a stop by Books a Million en route. My son is pretty imaginative and seems to be very smart. When he was almost 2 he still wasn't talking. We had his hearing checked and his use of language was that of a kid over 3. He's caught up with it now. He'll probably get into this just fine.” 6:49:18 AM 7/19/05 “Some books written by a female author that are realing interesting are books by Madeleine L'Engle. The ones that I really enjoyed when I was younger was "A Swiftly Tilting Planet" and "A Wrinkle in Time". Her books are a little more involved though and might not be enjoyed by children.” 7:29:09 AM 7/19/05 “My kids and I LOVE Beverly Cleary's books......."Beezus and Ramona"...& my favorite....."The Mouse and the Motorcycle" GREAT reading for kids!!!” 7:34:15 AM 7/19/05 “Oh!!! Madeleine L'Engle was my favorite author when I was young! :-) She is an awesome science fiction writer! :-) I also remember reading most of Frank L Baum's Oz books... They were very interesting... Might need to dig up these books again and re-read them as an adult... Many of the books mentioned LWW, LOTR, Oz, etc. had complexities that were lost to children but can be gleaned as an adult... A few other of my favorite authors are Edgar Allen Poe (loved reading his stories as a child) and James Thurber (More adult humor--I read his works as a high school student.) The Ann of Green Gables Stories were some of my favorites as well.” 8:17:26 AM 7/19/05 “I read the Chronicles as a kid, around 8 years old, I think. I bought them from amazon.com a few months ago so I could re-read them. Of course, I see now how much I missed as a kid, so I'd say its okay for most to read.” 8:49:44 AM 7/19/05
