anyone a fan of these sorts of movies? ive seen the popular mainstream ones: hero, house of flying daggers, and of course crouching tiger, hidden dragon

just watched hofd. thought the ending was kind of clumsy and drawn out, but a beautifully filmed movie nonetheless. hero was brilliant, and ct,hd was a cinematic masterpiece

just my $.02
IMHO

and all that

good stuff all of them. My wife hates it when I bring them home, but she does watch them. I thought hofd was excellent, many twists and turns, but you're right, the ending was waaaaay to drawn out. W

House of Flying Daggers was great. The colers were stunning. I liked Hero better though just because the story was better. I'd like to see some of the directer's other films like Raise the Red Lantern and his other non kung fu movies.

And of course I still love the old origanal high wire, Saterday morning Kung Fu Theater movies as well.

Hero was one of the more accessible Chinese (mainland) movies. Good story, great visuals. Raise the Red Lantern is a more "western" movie in that it doesn't have as much imagery as Hero, CTHD, or HoFD. Good none the less, and stars Gong Li ( a great 'visual' herself!).

There's a really good one whose name I can't remember; its about a cousin who ascends to the throne by getting his relatives hooked on opium, then cuts the opium with arsenic to paralyze them one-by one. Well done, with great visuals, but (DAMN!) can't remember the name!

Although not a Chinese movie, check out The Last Emperor if you haven't seen it. Long, sometimes tedious, but a great story about the transition from the dynasties to the cultural revolution.

survey time
do you prefer subtitles or dubbing?

i suspect im going to be the odd peking duk out when i say dubbing. i especially prefer it in the movies like cthd, because reading the subtitles distracts from taking in the gorgeous scenery and set pieces
