Pentagon wants to raise age limit for recruits
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Faced with major recruiting problems sparked by troop deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Pentagon has asked Congress to raise the maximum age for U.S. military enlistees from 35 to 42 years old.

Damn... so does that mean when the draft comes back, they will take the old men also?

My coworkers and I have figured out how to solve the low recruitment and Social security problem together...

Draft all the old men, anyone over 60 must go in. The beauty is in its simplicity. You get rid of the group that uses social security, you get fresh recruits. Plus this age group is full of crotchety bitter know it alls, I think there is a plan here...

They generally like younger people because they're more malleable. I worked as a civilian contractor for gov entity and liked it. I didn't have to put up with the bull & had gov transportation. I don't like being transferred every where with a young family but the folks were good. We reluctantly parted company when I went to work for the state. While I'm years away from 60, older folks would probably tell them where to go.

They should take the people who voted for Shrub last time around, knowing they were voting for this war. You want it; you fight it!

Being a fat old geezer, I see the writing on the wall...........

I'm sure we will now see those neo cons and hard core right wingers who wanted this war in Iraq so bad, sign up and help with the fight.

I will personally apologize to each one for having the courage of his/her convictions.

skiracer - I guess you'll have to read between the lines. That should be easy, considering my age and my feelings about the post by birch. I could e-mail you a copy, if you request it.

Likewise, birch. That entire thing, from "Remark deleted" through "ignore this user" is one post, mine. I could not think of a good remark, so I fabricated that to make it look like Matt edited it. Hope I did not upset you. Peace.

Having just returned from Iraq I can tell you there are a large number of old farts over there with the National Guard. In my company alone there were at least twelve people over 50. That is twelve out of 91. Of course that is normal for the Guard, the Army has much younger folks working in it.
As for signing up though, I think that basic training and a twelve month deployment would be pretty hard on a 42 year old. All the old farts in the Guard are going for a retirement, myself included at age 37.

Whether or not you voted for Bush, or whether or not you are in favor of us being involved in this war, you still enjoy the freedoms and protection that our armed forces have afforded us. (assuming you're a US Citizen posting here of course). I personally appreciate every one of our military servicemen and women who are doing their duty, wherever it may be. Thank you.
