I've realized over the past two months while doing fieldwork that I need a car. However, as some of you may know, I live in Brooklyn. Fully owning a car is way too expensive while I continue on with school. Someone mentioned that there is such a beast as a car co-op. I've never heard of this before and if any of you have, please spill the beans!

The other optionis I can possibly buy a cheap used car. However, the insurance would kick my butt financially right now. :(

Stranded??

Here's one thing(not exactly a coop, though) that provides something in between taking taxis and using standard rentals or leases"

I see their cars all around town. They also have them in theNYC/NJ area.

I don't remember the name of the company, but here in Hyde Park (Chicago) they have a couple of cars. There is a monthly fee to belong. You reserve a time. They give you some code to break into, er, open the car and the keys are in a safe in the car. When they first introduced it here, I thought the monthly fee was a bit high. Don't know what the current situation is, but will check on it, if helpful.
